for making a backer for the tape to stick to i'd think body filler would work well
the shape of the trim would lock in the filler, even if it cracked every 1 inch
we use the grey tape (joedoh refers as vhb) for body kits and window louvers
use of the 3m adhesion promoter would guarantee a permanent bond

I really love the deluxe trim but i just couldnt wrap my head around drilling holes in my newly restored and painted cab. I'm going to have to reconsider now.

If any of you does this PLEASE take detailed photos of it and especially if you run into any hangups doing it. Thanks to Newfisher and of course to JoeDoh for remembering it and posting the link here.

The last time I was at the auto paint store I saw a display of various clips and they had some wire clips that had the rubber seal on them. If I was still thinking of using wire clips I would go back there and see if I could find something that would work. I've decided that I'm not going to drill holes to mount the trim so I'll leave it off until I figure out some way to hold it on. I'm going down to see my son next week and get his advice about it.

that's a good idea for straight trim, which our cab trim is not

After reading this thread I had to open the trim kit that was bought in the 80's to see if the clips would hold the trim tight to the truck. After temporarily installing trim to drivers door, clips were found to be correct size and held tight to body. They appear to have a fabric or foam adhered to the clip. I have 48 holes in total on cab, and 46 clips were supplied with kit.

Well the clips fit good, but I was given two top rights and two bottom lefts for the back of the cab. After all of these years protecting that dang cardboard box . I remember getting them from the truck shop of orange California at the charlotte auto fair in the late 80's.. if anybody out there got the other set that was mess up look me up., LOL LOL

you could

1. use a heat gun on the lexan spacer, lexan is really nice to work with heat, it turns into a noodle. this would let you run a continuous strip of tape if that were the desire.

2. you could do it the way I did it and attach the tape only in small sections. curves be damned, it would work that way.

like I said, it was easier done than said, I was done with the bed in minutes once I had some spacers cut.

I'm thinking the modern badge tape would work fine for our purposes. Even though the tape will be narrow behind this trim, the number of linear inches would be plenty I would think.

I Think I would have Added - Thin Teflon Circles with a
Cross Cut Center with Main Vertical Cut going out the Bottom of Circle
to Act as the Slip On . . .035 Material - should do it Up Fine .
Would Act as a Cushion to the Steel - Quieter - and Plug the Hole ..

P.O. drilled holes in the bottom pieces of my BBW trim. A local shop says he may have pieces, but I have yet to go try him. If he doesn't, I'll be ordering a full set of trim and only need the bottom pieces (I think my stock other pieces are not tweaked) and then I could sell other pieces I don't need. Send me a PM because i'll be working out trim in next month or two for sure to finish off my build.

Just today I took all the clips off my stainless. Took some pictures too. I've counted the rusty images on the back of the trim and I count 42 spots plus 2 spots for the figure 8 clips plus 2 more spots for the bolt clips that hold the trim on the door(s) for a total of 48 spots.

I bought a taped together bundle of stainless. enough to do 3 trucks for $35 at a swap meet.
all the clips were in a plastic bag. sadly, none of the stainless is perfect, but I used a small rubber hammer and some tongue depressors taped together to massage some of them back to almost normal
If you didnt look at the other side of the truck, you would think they were perfect.

I have half original and half aftermarket trim on my doors/cab. The trick is having the right clips, or you will dent the aftermarket pieces too easily.

Buy a bag of clips from Bills Trucks up here in Canada. He also sells the trim and it comes with clips, but they blow, and the clips they sell in a baggy are perfect. PM me for more info. I’m lucky to live five mins from that shop
