Lol thats one way to fix the problem. I ran 4 sand bags in my little black truck (2wd) when I first got it and that worked real good.

Mister B, is your truck 2wd? if so, how are weighting the back for snow? It snowed here in KC and i lost traction a dozen times or so, and i see you are in Utah, so you are accustomed to the snow. let me know if you have any tips.
Yeah, it's 2 WD. When it snows, the back fills up with snow, which weighs it down and helps. I don't run any sand or anything else. It does surprisingly well. Might be due to the skinny tires and/ or the particular rubber my tires have. Some tire brands are more sticky in snow and ice than others. It also helps to be light on the gas pedal

Re: 1969 C20 Daily Driver

I found a good deal on some H2 wheels in black (which is exactly what i want), Its the wheels and tires together. The tires are 285/70 r 17. My questions is whether i will run into problems on the front end?

I know they will fit the back, the tires back there are 33x12.5 r 16.5's and look great. The tires i am looking at should finish out in the 32-33 range, but i want to make sure they wont rub, or if they would, what is the fix? raise the front?

Re: 1969 C20 Daily Driver

I would think you could raise the front a 1" or to clear if you needed to. Maybe some spring spacers for under the springs or some new front springs, I would venture to say yours are sagging some after 44yrs.. lol

Re: 1969 C20 Daily Driver

First of all, welcome. I will tell you that I bought Rocinante, a 72 GMC C25 (now with a chevy grill) in '97 as a winter beater in New Hampshire. She has always been a labor of love once I realized that she wasn't going to die on me. She is almost the same as yours, just the farm truck model. The old man I bought her from told me the old 292 was shot and I would have to replace it which I did, 4 years later. I am running a 350 RV spec but I still miss the old 6, it was a real trooper. I bought her with 198k miles and now I have about 430k on her. She has been all over the country, Canada and Alaska with me and with me being back in the military, she handles all of my moves pulling my 27' car hauler with my Hyundai and all of our shtuff. These days I know she will probably never be perfect but she's mine. My ex-wife tried to get me to trade her in for a later model which gave me a splendid idea. I did just that and now I am happily remarried to someone who will not allow such talk. I have done a lot of work here and there over the years. A whole new electrical system only took me a long weekend to do and my 350 is on her last rebuild but my 4 speed Muncie has never been opened. The synchros were shot when I bought her and they still are. Here are a few pics of her and her models. One day I will take some more.
BTW, she's a 2WD and a New Hampshire truck. When she slides in the snow, I remind myself she did just for 25 years before I bought her and she survived. The power steering is great, too! More push-ups, better steering. Any questions, feel free to ask.

Re: 1969 C20 Daily Driver

I got a good deal on some 02 8 lug stock wheels ( i wanted to get out of the 16.5's and it had two different sized tires on it which i don't like). I've put the new ones on and i can't say that i am 100% pleased. The tires are a 225/75 which isn't tall enough, but with these wheels the tires set well inside of the fenders. SO, should i use a spacer behind the wheel? I am not sure i want to replace the tires just yet, they have some tread left.

I'd like this thing to eventually set level and for the tires to fill up the wheel wells. Any advice would be appreciated.

2 inch spacers? That seems like a lot.

Sicklajo,

The rims i picked are 16 x 6.5, pretty narrow, but when i got them i didn't understand that would mean such a narrow stance. All that said, i like your truck, so i will take any advice you have.

Re: 1969 C20 Daily Driver

The backspacing on my rims is about 4 3/4". Check what yours are with those newer rims. Whatever the difference is between yours and mine should be the size of your spacer.

Great, I'll check. I am thinking that eventually i will run 235/85 R16's on the truck. i like a tall tire. Does the 6.5 width of the rim limit my tire size? how, if so?

Yeah you dont want a wide tire for those rims, but the ones you listed will work great I ran that size on my duallys and they worked good.

That size tire will be just right for that rim. Personally I'd go 265/75/16 but 235's will work just fine.
Tire rack has a good spec page that shows what rim width range will work for each size tire.
For example this is the page for my Michelins. Look at the column that says "Rim Width Range" and it gives you a good idea of what you can get away with.

This is my old 99 C2500 with the same rims you've got with 265/75/16.

Are the axle's longer on this year of truck? If my 69 could have the exact same stance as that 99 i would be over the moon.

Re: 1969 C20 Daily Driver

Here are some better photo's.

I measured the backspacing and its 4 and 3/4's just like Sicklajoie's. I think an 8 inch rim must put the extra width on the outboard side of the wheel, resulting in a wider stance. That said, i did some measuring and i think i am going to get the 2 inch spacers anyways, it would put the tires just one inch inside of the top of the fender.

I've found reasonably priced spacers on ebay, but if anyone knows of a better place to get them, let me know
