Re: Do you run a fire extinguisher in your truck?

When i was a little sh!& my grampa had a 71 cheyanne with all the bells and whistles. Including an extinguisher on The pass. Kick panal. I remember that latch chingalinging everytime he would hit a bump or something. Ahhh memories
In 2007 my alternator started throwing sparks in My 67 longbed and i started an oily rag i had in the fendercup on fire. I was fortunate and pulled into work, grabbed an extinguisher and sprayed the fire, freaking out all the customers watching. ( i worked at a bmw dealership at the time)

Re: Do you run a fire extinguisher in your truck?

When I was 20 I had a 50 chevy . After doing some work on it one afternoon . I saw the paint on my hood start bubbling as I was driving down the road at 40 mph on a country road . Long story short , I got watch as my beauty of a 50 chevy truck melted before my eyes

I have always and I mean always put a fire extinguisher in every vehicle I have ever owned for the past 30 years since that happened. I have never had another fire in a vehicle (knock on wood ) But you can bet your butt ,I am prepared if and/or when it happens to me or someone else.
You never know you might save someone else's dream
Better to have it and not ever use it
Than to be that person watching it melt ... trust me

Re: Do you run a fire extinguisher in your truck?

Keep it on the R kick panel. Never needed it for myself, and never fired it but have had it re-filled/recharged over the years.

I did come upon a car wreck where the driver was trapped in the car with moderate injuries and drunk. Did not want to even attempt to get him out, but would have if the car burst into flames. There was smoke coming out from under the hood and steaming sounds (likely coolant or refrigerant but scary nonetheless). I was somewhat relieved to have my extinguisher at the ready standing guard until the fire department/paramedics showed up and said they had it.

Great to have and not need.

Absolutely, Like they say; Don't leave Home without it. I'm retired firefighter and arson investigator, of the car fires I've been on, 1 outta 50 had a working extinguisher with them.

Here's a guy in Florida's LS1Miata. It was on it's 1st test drive with an LS1 V8 in it and NO Extinguisher. It was driving it's First 4 miles, when this happened.

There you go, out of the way and accessible. I'm thinking one on each side.

Re: Do you run a fire extinguisher in your truck?

I'm wondering how I should mount one. I really don't want to drill into the body; I have a 1981 Silverado and its rust-free. Could mount it to the seat perhaps, depending on how large the FE is.

There is a local company that can order 2.5lb, 5lb and 13lb Halon 1211 extinguishers. I think the size for the 2.5lb is around 5" width and 14" height.

Looks like Lou and I may be running the same FE.

Mine came with a spring-loaded bracket that I screwed
to the floor on the hump.

Exclamation "Better Safe Than Sorry!"

I just hope it's never needed but it is comforting to have along for the ride.

Re: "Better Safe Than Sorry!"

Not quite the same truck but the same idea. For offroad rigs it's essential. I have one small and one large, but planning to add another small one. The mounts are from DIY4x.com and are super easy to remove FAST. (not to mention way cheaper than the Jeep crowd pays) Once the '68 hits the road, it will see a small one some place inside the cab.

I run a soft top on the blazer, so the back one is always accessible. Even if I'm on my lid, someone can grab the back one.

Anything with a steel neck is maintainable and strong. The plastic ones are not rechargeable, tend to leak sooner, and also not as strong. Mine are Badger and Amerex. It should also be at minimum a type ABC.

Re: Do you run a fire extinguisher in your truck?

You can mount one outboard of the driver's seat where the floor angles up or in front of the driver's seat. Either way make sure it's somewhere you can grab it within reach of the driver's door. Most times you'll be grabbing it from outside.

I don't have one...but after reading some of the positive responses here supporting it, I might look into it.

Thanks! I think you're right too. I put in 4 Kidde ABC extinguishers into a rental condo I own and already two are indicating "red zone" readings on their gauges. I was going to use those up at my place and replace them before ski season comes.

Let me ask you fellows, if a fire extinguisher is past its warranty yet indicates a "green zone" on the gauge, what does one need to do with it?

Re: Do you run a fire extinguisher in your truck?

So HOW are you guys mounting your extinguishers exactly.

After reading this thread, and the ones linked below, I would like to understand in detail how to go about attaching it. I'd really hate to have to drill/screw into the body/floor.

Maybe I can rig it to the seat somehow? My seats are vinyl so I would have to protect it from any tearing too.
