Does anyone have a schematic of how the vacuum hoses should be hooked up?

That is not an HEI distributor, the coil is the easy giveaway. The rotor cap is the other, and HEI will be larger and look a lot different.

On vacuum lines there should only be 2, or 3 if you have power assist brakes. One vacuum line will come off the carb and go to your distributor cap for your vacuum advance on the timing.
The second should come off either the carb (though probably not on a one-two barrel) or it comes off your intake manifold and goes to your valve cover for PVC pressure relief.

McMurphy, Thank you very much. That did the trick! The dog under the hood is running much better. It should work just fine until the LSx motor goes in next winter.

Matt...that IS an HEI distributor...It is one of the older models from the GM line..I've seen them before. Not all HEI's are coil over..some did have the separate coil..Trust me I know. LOL! I've looked up this stuff. Anyhow, the motor looks good! Edit...Easy way to tell is the type of coil...and the diameter of the rotor cap...a points distributor isn't as large in diameter.

TJ, thanks for the info. I had a feeling it was. I also looked up the casting number, it is a 250. Casting number 366855.

Hmmmm,
Hard to see in that pic.
Are you guy's so sure that it is an HEI?
Why can't you just pop off the cap & look?
Does it have points or an inductive pickup?
I haven't messed with one of these on a straight six since a teenager, but i know that my '96 4.3 V6 has an HEI, and it is tiny.
Does the cap have a window in the side to adjust the dwell? (for points only)

Making some progress. I drove it up to the parts store today. Here is a comparison of where I started vs where I am now. Still a long way to go, but it is fun to see it start to take shape.....

Thank you, it is fun to see it transform. My next step is to get the rear end a little lower and add a bit more clearance for the front tires, I am getting rubbing when I need to turn sharp.

Progress being made. Picked up a used radiator to replace the leaking one in the truck. Amazing, fixed all my overheating problems. Got the motor timed right and fixed all the vacuum leaks. Adjusted the valve lash. Wow what a difference that made. Running 100 times better.

Now the fun stuff. Put bags on the rear, mounted the tank, and in the process of making a plate to mount the manual valves from Dloe. They are a great alternative to the expensive electric valves. Simple and work great. Also nice to support a board member. The plate will have the 4 valves and the tank pressure gage. I also picked up a York compressor for the air.

Progress is being made. I got the york compressor installed, a Taurus electric fan, Volvo fan controller and twin temperature sender from BMW. All junk yard parts. The Taurus fan works great, this is the second vehicle I have put it on. The Volvo controller and BMW twin switch really make the install a lot easier the piecing together fuses and relays. Plus the parts are readily available in the salvage yards.

Taurus fan: $20
Volvo Relay/controller: Free
BMW temp switch: free

I was going to hold off on the fan, but I had to do it to fit the York compressor in. The compressor fills up my 5 gallon tank from empty to 150 psi in about 20 seconds at idle. I added a pressure controller so the York kicks on at 110 and kicks off at 150. I also put an override switch in the cab to turn it off if I want.

I am in a rush to get it together to go to the Woodward cruise. I am going to redo the relay panel and clean up the wiring post cruise. I also want to trim up the clean up the york mounting bracket a bit. ( I am actually a little surprised it all worked the first time it went together.) Now that it works, I can clean up the install and make it look as good as it performs.

Yes, it was a good time. This was the first time I actually got to cruise in it. When is the 28th street cruise?

Thanks for the compliment. The compressor has worked out really well. It fills the tank in a heart beat. I really enjoy the projects of piecing stuff together from junk yard parts. The compressor and the fan relay are my two favorite so far.

Making slow progress on the notch. Cutting and fitting always takes more time than expected, but as I am learning, a good fit makes for a good weld. Maybe I am just a slow learner....

First side notch in, bag mounting plate attached to frame rail.

I am copying where, JDoisher - Maggies build, for where he put his rear bags. Also started to fit the second notch and clean up the rails for welding.

I am happy to be making more progress. I got the other notch welded in, added the cross tubs and lowered it down to check the stance. Next I plan on fitting the bag mounts in. Here are a couple pics of the progress.

The second notch went in a lot easier. I fit each piece, and tacked them in place, then I pulled it off to weld up as much as I could on the bench before welding it to the frame. It made for a lot less off angle welds, which made for a lot higher quality welds.
