Re: Finally caught a break NP440 / MY 6
Cort...
Good summary and well put regarding using this tranny if you want to spend less than a grand. Does the t5 have an electronic speedo? Tom PS - that speed house some referenced earlier that had 10 of these for $2500, I believe these are complete units with shifters...but not 100% sure. If they are, someone could make a nice profit buying all these at once...

Re: Finally caught a break NP440 / MY 6
I'm not as up on the T5 as most, i know there's world class and non world class, but i THINK the earlier S10 units were mech spedo and later ones are electronic? Others here will know A LOT more about them.

Re: Finally caught a break NP440 / MY 6
I finally found an iron-case version of this trans... Has the Mopar bellhousing style, and requires that special aluminum bellhousing.
Picked it up at my swap meet for $100--included the shifter, trans, bell, throw-out bearing and clutch fork. Unfortunately, I can't use it in my '61, because of the bellhousing, but I CAN use it i my '56 Chevy hot rod when that project comes off the back burner. -Brad

Re: Finally caught a break NP440 / MY 6
First longer drive with this thing was yesterday (I'm slow), and the gearing on this thing is just about right. 1st gear appears to be a little bit tall with my 3.73 rear end for towing, but 2nd and 3rd are just about perfect. 4th gear with the .73 overdrive REALLY drops the RPMS down...
Question - can anyone tell me where I can get the parts to stop a leak in the speedometer cable housing? It seems to be leaking down the speedo cable itself. Also, does this speedo gear take a standard TH400 gear if I need to switch it out? Thank you, Tom

Re: Finally caught a break NP440 / MY 6
Tom, I fooled around for quite a while trying to get the correct gear for my speedometer.
My issue was the gear holder that fits into the transmission - there are two of them (up to 39 tooth and 40 tooth and up) and I needed the one that I didn't have. Once I got the correct holder I found the gear which is similar to this; http://rover.ebay.com/rover/0/e11050...AMOTORS%3A1123 IIRC, the gears for these transmissions are the same as the gears for the TH400. Greg.

Thanks for that Greg...
Can you check that hyperlink? I clicked on it and nothing came up. BTW, what fluid are you running in yours? Tom

I ran GM ATF as I read was used from the factory. I blew 2nd gear apart after about 500 miles. I will never know if it was the wrong fluid or a weak part or what but once I got it rebuilt I went with 80W90 non synthetic gear oil, which is what was recommended by the guy (Jamie from Passon Performance) who sold me the rebuild parts, told me to run. So far, no issues. Incidentally, I bought a second MY6 because of the scarcity of parts. It is out of a Camaro - so I am told - and it has the GM/Dodge bell housing bolt pattern. It is still filled with ATF. Greg.

Re: Finally caught a break NP440 / MY 6
Dazzoman,
You would need the correct mounting bracket or fabricate your own in order to center the shifter over the top like that. Also you may have to get new shift rods if making this move, forward and to the center, will throw their alignment off. The shifters themselves should all be the same just the brackets and shift levers are different. Here are the two other brackets I know of and now you mention you have one from a Van application...

Re: Finally caught a break NP440 / MY 6
Music man ,
Ya thats the shifter I need to get ( hee hee ya right ) and I was stupid to buy this one let alone I messed up in buying the tranny that had the weird ears on the left side instead of the one that will bolt onto an 60s bellhousing which would have been better for me hence all the fabricating I had to do to make an bracket strap assembly . The good news is if I pull this off with no F ups , many others can benefit in that they can use their original 60s bell housing - old starter pateren , cross member and fork assembly all in tact . It will at least make many other possible MY6 installs instead of not finding one of the rare ones . What do you think ? Thx |

Re: Finally caught a break NP440 / MY 6
Here's pictures of the shifter numbers. I can shoot a couple more pictures of both shifter as I have them on the bench right now.
From what I have read, GM purchased the shifter from Hurst but used GM plain shifter handles. You can also use a Hurst Super Competition shifter. You can send your shifter to Hurst for rebuild. Kind of pricey considering that the parts kit is reasonable & the video makes it look easy. http://www.hurst-shifters.com/shifter-rebuild-program/ https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=huUETRzXM7k |

Re: Finally caught a break NP440 / MY 6
Dazzoman, would you post a photo of your shifter?
Hurst will rebuild, but it will be pricey and they took a while to do it. Better to do what Blue666(2) suggests, but show us what you have. Here are some more photos of the shifter. *Also someone posted a link that had this New process shifter with Reverse on the other side, so I guess there is another style of this Shifter(?)

Re: Finally caught a break NP440 / MY 6
I had my shifter rebuilt from Hurst, and it was money well spent... the difference in performance was night and day.
The Mopar 4spd OD shifters are also Hurst, but they have different fingers coming out the bottom and will not work with our version of the transmissions. Any Hurst, GM or Mopar "Bayonett" style shift handle can be used with the shifter. I have a Mopar van shift handle in my Suburban: It's a simple tubular black-painted shift handle with the threads on the end for the shift ball (not flat stock like the chrome shift handles are). On the van, it comes up through the floor about even with the driver's shoulder, and angles forward a bit so the shift ball is in line with the driver's thigh. On my Suburban, I simply turned it around backwards, and it now angles back just perfectly, and being round stock and painted black, it had the utilitarian look I was going for with the Suburban. I'll end up putting a chrome shifter in it, and transferring the round black one to my K10. -Brad

And I've got a Mopar version of the same transmission, with its shifter (two of them, actually... geez, I've got two of the Mopar versions, and three Chevy...) The rods from the bottom of the shifter to the levers on the transmission, do not interchange from Chevy to Mopar on these transmissions. The fingers coming out of the bottom of the shifter body are also different between the two versions. -Brad

Well, To make this all even more interesting after I went thru all the trouble to get this NP440 , it won't reaally shift into reverse ! I'll probly send that one back . Another one is being sent to me from an wrecker in about a week WITH the original 1986 shifter included ! Gotta love these wrecking yards . Before all this I bought this shifter (pictured, a bit different positioned to the left of hump) on ebay for about $200 .... |

I have the GM version in my '63, two Mopar pattern units in the garage, and a GM empty main case on the bench. I was hoping I could swap out the innards of one of the Mopar units into the GM main case. Any idea if that is a possibility? Greg
