Keep the truck, the guy just likes what you did to it and would probably run it to the ground and scrap it in a year. You made it yours, it's always hard to replace a good friend.

Certainly looks like it's worth at least 3K....

Re: PO's son wants it back

88LTwagon i agree with your price assesment around here. I stumbled on your thread by accident and the saw your in pasco. Small world. I used to live in desert plateu. Your truck looks familiar.
Anyway, I went through this situation a couple years ago with a 59 suburban. I did wind up selling it back to the son, however i made no improvements to the vehicle.
I would not feel bad about selling it back to him at fairmarket/replacement value. If he dosen't want to pay that he really does not want it, or he dosen't have the money. If he doesn't have the money to buy it at that price, he has no money for maintenence on it.
Ask him how many old cars/trucks he has played with. If the answer is no he probably has no idea what hes getting himself into.

Been reading this and everyone's responses. Lot's of good thoughts from everyone as usual. In my opinion, you already are a winner. For so many decisions there is no right or wrong. Being thoughtful and working through it is the way to go. You will make the right decision!

Re: PO's son wants it back

I think it is generous of you to even sell it at market value.

My dad's Cummins is in town. His 5th wife sold it when he died even though she knew I really wanted it. At the time I wasn't in a position to buy. The guy who bought it won't sell it. I offered to find him a nicer truck, whatever color he wanted etc...

The worst thing is he's beating the hell out of it.

Re: PO's son wants it back

It is a small world, I actually bought a house in Kennewick last fall, I thought I had updated my location.

I'm glad you agree with me on the value, I've seen much nicer trucks on CL for less, specifically right after i bought mine Haven't seen any lately, though, but I haven't been looking, either.

I ran c10 listings on my craigslist app yesterday for Or. & Wa. And the prices seem to be in line or higher than 3k for longbeds.

I'm in the ranco reata area. If you see a butt-ugly black/white 73 travelall or 78 gmc swb tan colored, running around thats me.
Sam.

I didn't read all the replies here, but it sounds like you've got the devil ridin ya to get a new set of wheels anyway.
Problem solved - sell it for $1800 when he comes back to talk you down and be done with it.

It's less than what you asked, but it's going to get you closer to what you want and in the end that's what it's really all about, know what I mean?

Best of luck with the new wheels! Let us know what you get.

Re: PO's son wants it back

I didn't even tell him a price, I told him I needed to talk to my wife about it and haven't heard back from him since. I guess I'll focus my repairs on the Caprice, and just use the C10 for what it does best until the wagon's where I want it. Entropy never sleeps.

Ask what you want for it, it's yours not his. If you don't want to sell then DON'T.

I would sell as a good deed.
I would figure upgrades and sell for a fair price.
Nice guys seldom win but sometimes I can't help being nice.

Re: PO's son wants it back

Sell him the truck if you want too.

Some conditions of sale that I would consider

1. The amount you sell it to him for is enough to buy another truck in better condition then the one you have. ( this compinsates for your time and effort you have put into this truck)
2. If you sell him the truck, you would like to have first option to buy it back if he ever wants to sell it
3. He can't have the truck until you have found another truck to replace it.

Re: PO's son wants it back

Also if I could come across a truck where I'm from for under $6000 I'd jump at it. It's depressing to hear people say is $2000 a fair price. Hahaha

He still had it as of fall of last year. I can remember a thread where he posted and still had the 66 under his signature.

Re: PO's son wants it back

I agree with BUDMAN. LIFE SUCKS AND **** HAPPENS.
I would keep the truck and he can find a replacement. I hate to think how many cars and trucks I have let slip from my fingers only to regret it in the end.
I admire your thoughts and you would be in the ranks of " Class act " for selling it to him at $2000.00. but is he going to learn anything by it or trash it like most kids do when they did not build it?
your call

Re: PO's son wants it back

I also agree with what's been said. If that truck was worth So much to the guy...why didn't he buy it from his dad? Heck...I've done that. lol Nothing wrong with it at all. If your not given a hand-me-down then there was a reason. If you still have the truck...keep it...don't give it away for cheap..Unless you Want to and would like to start another project. Heck, if the Po's son came asking for my 66 I'd be like HECK NO it Ain't for sale. With the amount of time and money I've put into it..NO way. There's to many hours of fun and to much money in that thing to watch it go away to someone who probably wouldn't even know how to work on it. I have to many memories in any of my trucks to even sell them. What's the big deal about him buying a different truck...heck...it ain't "Dad's truck" but its still "A truck like my dad owned" type of thing. Like said before..Life sucks. This is an old thread, but I'm also curious as to what happened.

Sell it for what you have in it. You may still regret it but you wont be out the money.

Re: PO's son wants it back

That is MUCH more than a $3,000 truck around here. Hell, if you had the T5 put in at a shop, that would cost you $2,000 alone.

I'm all for helping the guy out (if you want to get another) but not at a cost to you. I would tell him that everything is for sale, that he has to like it more than you do. Then smile and say that you REALLY like that truck.

Let him make the first offer. He will probably low ball you anyway, then it is a no brain'er, let him find another truck.

Jim

Re: PO's son wants it back

Alot of people now a days want to inherit something from someone. Well that is what was going on with my grandpa's 64 chevy truck. Alot of family members were claiming it for themselves. Well I didnt want to wait till grandpa died to see who inherits the ol' pickup. SO I bought his truck off him a couple weeks ago and been driving it everyday. He came over to visit and seen me workin on it. Brought a smile to his face. SUre glad I bought it so he can see me driving it.

Re: PO's son wants it back

He never got back to me, I'm still driving it and using it, even replaced the wood and strips in the bed. I might trade my brother for his '73 3+3 since my family has grown and no longer fits in it, but I haven't decided yet, I really like both trucks.
