I have a dent on the back of the cab that is a pain to get to from inside that is just above the bed when it's sitting on the frame, I've seen where others would cut out the inside of the cab to fix the dent, I'm just not big on causing more work than I've already caused myself!!

here's what I'm talking about, if anyone has any suggestions let me know.
A stud welder and a slide hammer would be the best thing maybe you can borrow one from one of your friends, or you can weld steel penny nails to it and use a slide hammer. <--Improvise
I wonder if you could use the studs that you would use in the stud welder and use them like you were stick welding and just use your stick welder instead of the gun, does that sound crazy?

Re: '68 Why did you do that

Spent all day Saturday cleaning up or should I say straighten the shop
it needed it! After Church Sunday, I got a chance to work on the truck, it was raining so the yard will have to wait.

I managed to get the Porterbuilt hood hinges installed. I used Street Trucks' article from two months and I must say it was one of the easiest mods i've done thus far. Well thought out. After they were installed I wanted to see how the Cowl would fit so I dug it out and put it on, looked good and cleared the hinges. The center section of the Cowl was begging for a change I took a chance and cut it out. I remember seeing it in Cloud 9's thread (and many others). I also finished a few filler pieces on the pillars of the lower cab where it was eaten by the rust that developed from all the leaves and trash that made its way in from the louvers in the cowl. here's a few pics as I know if I don't post pics it didn't happen.

Re: '68 Why did you do that

Everything looks great! At this rate you will be done in no time.

For that cab dent I have to agree with Brian, a stud gun and slide hammer. My dent was very sharp and only about 1" round so my method worked well. Eastwood has a mig stud welding kit but looks just like a fancy nozzle to hold the stud as you weld it on. You may try improvising as Brian said if you have 2 steady hands. Here is a link showing the Eastwood mig stud weld kit.

Re: '68 Why did you do that

Wow! two weeks away and it feels like i've spent several hours getting caught up on everyone's builds this evening. I havent' managed to do anything lately on the truck except thinking about what's the next item to work on or should I say spend $$ on! I still have the passenger door and the hood to strip the paint on. Hood looks like it's in the good condition except for the front edge. It has rust bubbling up thru the paint. we'll see what it looks like after I get stripped.

Re: '68 Why did you do that

Can't believe it's been it's been 6 months since I posted anything! i'll have to see if I can find any pics of recent progress

a couple of months ago I fit the hood and noticed the Passenger's side gap was too large.... so I cut a pie shape out so I could weld it up. The Drivers side was too "long" so I cut a pie out of it too!

Re: '68 Why did you do that

In November I decided to go ahead and start getting everything I needed to get the engine fired up. a few posts back I fabbed up the SSTL gas tank although it came out "alright" I just wasn't satisfied so I purchased an Aluminum tank. I had to cut the frame a little so I boxed this area off and broke the bottom edges so a shelf for the tank to sit on. I haven't decided how to finish the bottom off yet so that I can strap the tank down. I did have to fabricate a new top or inlet for the tank so I can bring up inside the bed side. I like the flush looking fills in the stake pocket I've seen a few guys do on this site.

Re: '68 Why did you do that

Early December I ran across a great deal on a 72 MGB, it runs great. It's kinda like driving a go cart. it's standard, 4spd. So, I spent some of my truck funds. I'll probably sell it after the spring.

Re: '68 Why did you do that

Back to the truck.... so I got the fuel tank mounted (sorta) I am going to use the corvette style Walbro external pump and filter/regulator from Wix. I bought these and some SSTL tubing for the fuel lines then I realized if I go ahead and run the fuel lines that I need a manifold on the engine to run the lines too! I didn't want to put the original plastic truck manifold back on the 5.3, so I looked at the Holley, FAST, and Edelbrock intakes. I ended up buying the Edelbrock. It fits under the hood nicely. I have about 2" of clearance from the top of the throttle body flange on the intake to the bottom of the hood.

Re: '68 Why did you do that

Last post to catch up on the current progress, I installed the steering column. I just put the old dash in the truck to use as a guide, I wanted to get the hole cut through the firewall to make sure it was going to work, because I had moved the firewall back. I think it came out ok, I still have to mount it for good later so you'll see a big gap from the column to the dash as I didn't want to scratch up by messing with it too much

You have some awesome skills, I am impressed with this build. No one will ask "why did you do that?" when this rig is complete.
