Re: 63 Fleetside Chevy C10 build
Tried the gas in the carb, nothing with that.
Fan does not seem to budge. That would make it a starter problem right? Posted via Mobile Device

Re: 63 Fleetside Chevy C10 build
Yep, that would make it a starting system problem, OR... Have you tried turning the engine over by hand? can you turn it any?
Once you determine that you can, in fact turn it by hand, then go through the normal steps: Is the battery good and charged up? Does it have any effect on the rest of the electrical system when you turn the ignition switch to start? Go buy a remote start switch setup and see if it will crank over with that. If not, then bad starter or solenoid. If so, then maybe the ignition switch is bad. On my '64, I found that a PO had wired in a start button, and that the orig. switch does not start the truck. |

Re: 63 Fleetside Chevy C10 build
The ignition switch does make the starter make a noise....and a while ago it tried to turn over. but since then it seems to have gone backwards to only the starter making noise.....so I think the starter may have seized....
any recommendations about how to go about testing a starter from these engines? I can pull it if that would make it easier to isolate it to the starter...

Re: 63 Fleetside Chevy C10 build
It sounded to me like the solenoid was engaging but the starter wasn't turning over. Make sure you have a fully charged battery(probably be good to have it load tested), check all connections on the battery and starter and try again.

It looks like you have a 292 with power steering. Is that factory?

Re: 63 Fleetside Chevy C10 build
Watched the video and I wonder if your fly wheel is stripped or if your starter gear is stripped or it could be possible that the fly wheel and starter gear are gammed. I would pull the starter off( only three 9/16 bolts) and see if something is stripped or jammed, cause it sounds like the starter is engaging but is grinding on something.

Re: 63 Fleetside Chevy C10 build
So after a half days worth of work.....she lives!!! Got the truck started. haven't moved anywhere yet as it dies once you hit the gas, but it will run and idle.
Here's the proof http://s1297.photobucket.com/user/fy...c97c0.mp4.html Also cleaned up the engine a bit so it's cleaner than it was Now to tackle some other things... need to figure out a gas tank for this thing....currently the gas tank is a gas can under the truck (pictured below) What are the best options for an under bed tank? something easy to install would be best at this point....looking at suggestions....if i get a different style do i need a vented or unvented tank? I might turn this into a flat bed for a while, in which case I might go for the keg tank look, or i might go with the under bed between the rails option....just don't think i want it in the cab. after i get this small smoke thing under control, and figure out the idle/gas issue I'll move on to the transmission and then figure out how to install the seats that i need to finish redoing. also tried my hand at bending fuel line today...think it could have gone better...

Re: 63 Fleetside Chevy C10 build
Plan on keeping this motor and probably this transmission in it. cleaned the carb out and let it idle for a bit longer and it seems to have fixed itself. I'm not sure the last time this motor ran on it's own...
stupid question but if the alternator is not working would the truck run? Reason I say this is because the battery keeps dying.....i can jump the truck to get it going but in it idleing today for a while it drained the battery from 12.4v to 11.2v... and while it is running I only get about 11.5v....which is a little south of the 14ish i should be at while running....ideas...suggestions?

Re: 63 Fleetside Chevy C10 build
I have a behind the seat tank you can have also. But I wouldn't recommend running it for too long cause the bottom is rusty but not rusted through. It would be fine for know so you could drive it. You can get new tanks from LMC or Classic Parts of America or The truck shop.

I do plan on keeping it generally stock, but if i change to the higher amp one wire alternator what do i do with the extra wires that are currently coming off of the alternator.....is that the wires to the external regulator? Where can I find a one wire that will bolt up?

Re: 63 Fleetside Chevy C10 build
The tank I have is as old as the truck, but never had fuel in it for many years. If you buy a new one it won't leak or rust for a long time, The fuller you keep the tank the better, meaning if you keep the tank full all the time you are less likely to have rust issues. When doing a one wire set up all you do is disconnect the wires from the old alternator and put the new one in and do a direct single wire run to the battery. Let me go out real quick and tale some picture of my set up so I can better show you. I'll send you a Private message cause the board won't let me upload pictures.

I was looking at it and if you look at the picture closely, you notice that the red wire goes straight to the engine block and the black wire goes to the starter.....sounds a little backwards to me.... this could also be the problem of not charging..... now i just wonder what all i fried by having the battery installed backwards in the first place. battery is being charged as we speak also got the accelerator problem fixed, i noticed that the spring had come out in the engine compartment when i was messing with stuff there. accelerator fixed, now with the new battery charge, i might be able to get this moving this afternoon......if so, i'll run it over to autozone to get the charging system tested.

Re: 63 Fleetside Chevy C10 build
Ok, switched the battery around....and it ran, my 14 month old ran away with my voltmeter, so i don't know if the alternator is working, but it made it's first motion on it's own.
I drove down the street and back. hiccups: ran over a jackstand (whoops) which destroyed said jackstand, the temp tank i hand hanging under the truck..pouring a gallon of gasoline all over my driveway and blew out the rear tire. all in all through it was a successful run, 1st 2nd and reverse definitely work.....makes a little noise that i will figure out later when i'm not spraying gas everywhere.... next on the agenda: new gas tank....(rear install...i hate the smell of gas) fix a bit of the rust up front patch cab install seats (cover seats also) clean interior new rear tire (doh!) enjoy driving i also need to figure out the power steering and get the a/c fixed power brakes might come too...power windows will for sure will let you guys know about the alternator when i find out where my son hid the voltmeter
