Re: 49 AD Frame up Resto
I agree, inliners are so underrated. I have plans for a 235 in a personal build, its so far from getting too, but I'm trying to stay with that engine choice (maybe hop it up). Thought I'd keep it all old school lowered, but just putting bag and ifs on it. Keep up the work.

Re: 49 AD Frame up Resto
Hello all, the truck I am rebuilding had an SM420 in it when I got it. Pulled it and put in a newer 235 engine with a newer sm420 running sweet together. The problem I am up against now is the different sizes in the yokes of each truck. The drive shaft I am using is a 17 spline set up and the tranny is a 10 spline set up. I have all the parts from each truck to the front yoke. I removed everything from the rear tranny cover, so the main shaft is what I am working from. The goal is to marry the main shaft to the 17 spline drive shaft. Any help is greatly appreciated.

Re: 49 AD Frame up Resto
Can you just swap the ends (yokes) out on the drive shafts maybe??

Re: 49 AD Frame up Resto
do you have any pictures? Im kinda confused. It sounds like you need to swap yolks and possibly need conversion ujoints.

Re: 49 AD Frame up Resto
The U joint on TOP came out of the original truck and is a 1/2 ton set up front yoke 17 spline. The UJ on bottom seems to be 3/4 and came with new tranny, front yoke 10 spline. The BOTTOM 3/4 rear yoke fits onto the new tranny and the TOP front yoke fits onto the original drive shaft. I am looking for help/advice/answers/suggestions to next steps. My goal is to use the top 1/2 ton front yoke with the bottom 3/4 rear yoke.
Notes: - the trunions are different sizes - the top rear yoke from the 1/2 ton does not slide on to the new tranny main shaft - the top front yoke fits the drive shaft of the truck - I am not going to switch main shafts in tranny's Questions: - is the main shaft of the SM420 suppose to be one size fits all? - is there a way to marry the yokes that fit main shaft and drive shaft with customer trunion and bearings - should I wait and find a doner S10 4x4 or other rear end and then worry about the U Joint? Thanks all.

Re: 49 AD Frame up Resto
Hi pvienneau
I my "Howard Knapp" (1952/53 Chevy)rebuild I am doing I got a 1985 K5 Blazer rear end for free and I had the open style drive shaft on the original 1952/53 driveshaft. I had to do some micrometer measuring and some internet google searching and yes that is what I did. I went into the local NAPA store with their part number that I found on their website and yes it did fit. I guess the stock car guys use these too. I am not sure of the number I used tho...sorry MikeC |

Re: 49 AD Frame up Resto
OK, I did some filing, steel wool and cleaning of the spline on my 49 rear yoke and it slid right on. Fits good. Next I need to find the Rear Trunnion Bearing and bushing I pulled off when I dismantled the truck. I've seen them several times while moving and search other parts.

Re: 49 AD Frame up Resto
Found the rear trunnion bearing and bushings in a cabinet out in the garage wrapped connected by a pipe cleaner. Never ever through anything away.

Re: 49 AD Frame up Resto
OK, I worked on the 17 spline yoke that wouldn't fit on my transmission main. I used a file and steel wool and was able to get it to slide on. Now I have a complete union that fits both the tranny and the drive shaft. I think I'm in good shape now. Question is do I replace the original trunnion with a newer u joint or just reinstall. It looks fine.

Re: 49 AD Frame up Resto
Picked up rebuilt 12 volt generator and a 12 volt regulator for build. Also rebuilt the steering gear again. Waiting to see if she leaks this time.

Re: 49 AD Frame up Resto
Changing direction. I'm going to combine the 2 trucks and make 1 starting with the frame and engine from this build and upgrading everything.
12 Volt, Power steering, Power Front disk brakes, Rear end to 3:55, Remove knee action and replace with new telescope shocks. Then drop the bed, front clip and cab on it from our running 1949 original truck.

Re: 49 AD Frame up Resto
Agreed, that is a cool shot without the front clip.
Why the two trucks to one? Guessing the body is better on this one? |

Re: 49 AD Frame up Resto
The one without the clip has some lower cowl issues and the one with the reef is very complete original. When the combine is done I will plan the next 49 build. The one with the reef on it is our 49 original and we decided to make it safer and able to go on longer trips. Once I have finished the combine then I will concentrate on the next 49 build. So many things that you can do with these trucks. BTW the combine will get a nice 235.

Re: 49 AD Frame up Resto
sounds like a good plan, glad you are doing both trucks. Don't be afraid of some cab work, its almost better to just put new metal in there anyway, coat and seam seal everything and not worry for another 50 years. 235's run so smooth, I luved driving my buddies with 3 on a tree.
