Re: Vinegar for rust removal

I just did a new, but old and rusted thermostat housing in vinegar. I kinda forgot about it and it sat for a week. Took it out and rinsed it off, then got side-tracked. Man, that thing had a surface coat of rust in 2 hours! So I dropped it back in the vinegar!
Oh, and even without salt, I got a little bit of the black scum.

Anybody try this on a cast exhaust manifold? Any reason not to?

Re: Vinegar for rust removal

I see absolutely no reason that this cannot be used on an exhaust manifold. I've used this trick on my radiator channels, some pulleys for my engine, and I've got some 6" PVC pipe with my bed sills soaking right now. It works great! But I will tell you this, I had my best results when I soaked the parts in a baking soda solution after I removed the parts from the vinegar. As mentioned before, the parts will need immediate attention or else they will flash rust. After my parts came out, I wet sanded them with 200 grit paper. After the sanding, I dried them and heated them with a hand held torch to eliminate any remaining moisture. The parts turned out great! I was not disappointed with the outcome. Just remember that it's a slow process. It takes about a week or so to get any real results!

Re: Vinegar for rust removal

I'm going to try this on my gas tank I just got. It has some pretty bad rust in the bottom. Was also going to try the slushing around with chains and what not inside to help remove also.

Re: Vinegar for rust removal

Worth a shot. There is an acid that can be had pretty easy that works good on gas tanks too....muriatic acid. It can be found at most home depots by the outdoor pool section. You can also use sodium bisulfate which is dry (can be made to liquid) and each pound of it is equal to 10oz of muriatic acid. I would try the vinegar 1st for cost effectiveness, but it would take probably 1-2weeks with the results Ive seen. The acid would probably be faster but cost more.

Re: Vinegar for rust removal

Quick search on home depot using "muriatic acid" shows quite a few results and starting at $13/gallon. I would probably go this route since it seems affordable and would give you faster results. It also etches the tank, which is a plus.

Re: Vinegar for rust removal

Id replace the sending unit...they can be found for around $30-40. The tank can probably be salvaged. Id dump the tank once the big stuff is broke free...replace w/fresh vinegar and let it soak for a few days at least. Might not be bad to do a final rinse w/the acid before reinstalling.

Mine is the same as yours. Its the correct part. I would call and talk with them 1st, but I ordered this part for my 63 in cab tank and had no issues.

Re: Vinegar for rust removal

Classic parts has them also for about the same price & their picture shows the slanted head. Im positive the Brothers part is correct also. Whichever dealer you go through, just make sure its for a 0-30 ohms system.

Re: Vinegar for rust removal

Soooooo, if you forget you put a water outlet in vinegar for 2 weeks, then take it out, clean it off and wire wheel it for powdercoat prep, you might find, like I did, that underneath about .006 to .010 the vinegar had worked it's way in and I started wire brushing off THE SHELL!
So now, I'm debating whether or not to sand blast it to take the shell off, then clean it and coat it, or just chuck it.
I don't need the piece, I was just going to do it as a display.
Pics to follow after I find my phone.

Thermostat housings are pot metal, just about everything will just eat them up, its better to just buy new once the corrosion starts.

Sorry Rich, this is a Jen-u-wine cast iron thermostat housing. It's the fact that I left it in for 2 weeks that did it.
Still can't find my phone!!
