Keep the truck and sell it. Wouldn't this option aviod having a salvaged title?

Good luck!

I have a 72 GMC longbed.
I was rear ended at a red light and my insurance company has totaled it.
I know I will never get back the $1500.00 I have put into the in the past year because I have already been down that road with the insurance company.

This is what I have done to it in the last year:
New distributor
alternator
shocks
battery
voltage regulator
window tint
seat re-upholstered
ignition switch
middle u-joint
a-c tubing under dash
a-c vaccum switch
new spark plugs and wires

It has all original trim on it.

Not sure if milage is 135000 or 235000.

So the question is, should i sit on it try to find a buyer who might want
it for parts or as part of a project, or should I take the insurance offer.

Its about a $1000.00 difference between the two.

Runs fine, it was my daily driver.

Thanks,
Mike
Hi Mike and welcome to the forum. I like the looks of your 72 GMC.

Re: my 72 GMC was totaled. Not sure what to do.

Worst case take the $2800 and the truck and then do some soul searching on what to do with it. Worst case someone will give you more than $1000 for it as it is.

The damage is not that bad. Yes it will take some money to fix it, but just remember there are no take backs after you let the insurance company have it.

And some salvage yard will reap the benefits of a very nice truck that they will part it out and make money on.

If your selling it put it on this forum, there are to many out here that need that first truck to learn with.

If you need to talk about it I live up in Gainesville, and can come down and give you a very good evaluation of the truck and what to do with it.

Find another clean title truck, and use the salvage truck for parts! Then sell the parts you don't need to us :-)

Re: my 72 GMC was totaled. Not sure what to do.

You Southern and Western guys are lucky. Those trucks just aren't around here in the Northeast anymore. I have had 2 '69s, a '70, and a '67. I wish I had all of them back. Great trucks.

The damage doesn't look that bad from the pics. I would try to fix it. Good luck with your decision.

Food for thought: After reading and checking out what this guy bought, you are definitely light years ahead with your vehicle. See below:

Re: my 72 GMC was totaled. Not sure what to do.

If the offer is from the other drivers insurance i'd talk to your own insurance company first in an attempt to do anything to keep the title from being changed to Salvage. I'd tell the insurance company the truck is worth way more than what their offering so it isn't totaled, its a classic collectors vehicle.

Re: my 72 GMC was totaled. Not sure what to do.

This is a bad question to ask here, and not because anything personal. Your region dictates your trucks value. Rustbelt homeowners may want to keep that truck. Here in CA I couldnt get rid of it fast enough because a clean title truck in similar or better condition is around every corner. A shortbed 70 in better condition than that just sold for 3500 down the street from me. I dont mean any offense by that, but you can see the position im in and my options are different than yours. You have to do what you feel you can afford. All the parts you mentioned can be removed from that truck and transplanted. However, a tr7ck you purchase may not need all those parts. What is a salvage title vehicle worth to you? Especially if it gets hit again. Its a tough dilemma and I empathize. Best of luck in your decision.

Re: my 72 GMC was totaled. Not sure what to do.

Thanks for all the advice.
Glad I asked you guys.

I ended up going with my original plan which was to sell it to my friend I work with. Turns out that the title won't be a salvage title so he will be getting a great deal and who knows, I might even get to babysit it some weekend.
This is his second 68-72 chevy/gmc.

I was already committed to my replacement daily driver and ended up with enough money to recover the cost to get the replacement. It's a 2000 Isuzu Rodeo, my second one. So I'm pretty happy with that. Of course it's no 72 GMC long bed. Maybe I'll get another GMC or Chevy down the road some day. I sure learned a lot and had fun with this one and really am glad that it won't be going to the salvage yard.
Thanks again.

The big thing... Not a salvage title! That in itself is great news.

No doubt he's getting a great deal. But to be honest, I'm can sleep well at night knowing that it won't be picked apart. I'm good with that.

while I'm more on mrb's side on this one I can understand that's why I put mine in storage for a decade no garage and pieces kept disappearing off my truck at night. but on the flip side they weren't smart enough to get my doors unlocked and steal a very expensive sound system but my wife's jetta they actually ripped the handle right out of the door and smashed the counsel to pieces to steal a POS jc whitney deck.

Re: my 72 GMC was totaled. Not sure what to do.

show them the NADA value of the truck. Its not that bad. Mine was in a lot worse shape when I bought it and it didn't have a title salvage. you can fix it and still have a damn nice truck Insurance companies are always looking to cheap out on vehicles especially the moron appraisers who don't know what the hell they are talking about in the first place. Good luck and drive on.

Re: my 72 GMC was totaled. Not sure what to do.

I think my head would explode if I moved to CA but I MIGHT could handle a short visit if it's true about "these trucks around every corner." Here I am busting my tail (and wallet, mostly wallet) to get parts for mine and then I read about how common these trucks are elsewhere.

Wow. Like I said, I would buy it from you once spring comes and I actually have some money in the bank and I don't even like automatics.
