If you were to change the valve covers to early Vette, and put black plug wires and remove the braided lines, PERFECT, the Caddy fits and would look awesome!

Again, personally, that is what MY trucks engine compartment would look like if I was running a V8. I love that look and there is nothing better on a small block than the early Vette covers. Hell, I have no intention what so ever of running a small block (not my thing) and I have a pair of those valve covers up on the wall of my garage as "art" which they are.

But in this engine compartment with the other things that are done, I vote no on the Caddy. :

Again I have to say PLEASE take this as ideas being tossed out there and not a hit to anyone personally, please. I am a big believer in following a theme. If you follow a theme you just can't go wrong.

This man speaks the truth.

There are WAAAY too many projects abandoned because folk just buy the latest thing they see in a magazine, and then they update to the newest "latest" thing and it doesnt work with the other stuff they bought. And they have just spent their dollars twice....

Its like painting your truck with glue and backing it into the local parts shop and seeing what sticks.

It never works out well when you do that.

Looking at the OPs engine with the late model rocker covers, it looks like it could almost handle one of those custom covers which incorporates the aircleaner, but goes down and hides the intake manifold (think the Ridler cars from 2005 ish).

But I havent seen the rest of the truck, to see what its theme is at present.

And that isn't for an EFI setup?

Re: Ideas for an air cleaner?

A custom cover could be made to cover either a carb setup or an EFI setup. The cover wont know whats under it.

But it would need to match the theme of the truck.

Good job~ I couldn't remember the robots names, but I could have sworn there was a Robby/Robbie the robot. I use the expression from Lost in Space quite often! "Danger, Danger Will Robinson!" I Loved that show, but I was smaller and didn't know much, but we did have imagination back then, right?

Re: Ideas for an air cleaner?

I like the classic look myself. Finned covers and a breather that does what it's supposed to do...Breath! This shot is of my 55 Chevy BelAir but I'll soon be figuring out something cool for my 55 truck that I'm about to restore. I'll probably mount another breather like this drop version but a bit smaller as the truck is only getting a ZZ5 engine. The big block flows a lot more CFM.

Re: Ideas for an air cleaner?

If you want that fresh off the farm look get an antifreeze jug and cut a hole to fit the carb and another at the pour spout then connect a black vinyl gutter run off pipe to the pour hole and then to a hole in the radiator support and leave O'Reilly Auto sticker on the jug, it gives it that custom look.

Don't ask how I know about that design.

Re: Ideas for an air cleaner?

Here's my ongoing attempt. The hood pancake detailed on another thread plus the tunnel ram/FAST EFI made the space limited, the perfect example of actions and unintended consequences. Pics show the constructed base plate then a homemade way to get the hood profile then the start of the oval construction. It will be a sealed air box when done with a 5" aluminum tube coming out of the driver side and 90 degrees to the core support and ending in a KN filter. I wanted to get the "vibe" of the old Caddy filter shown on this thread and my original idea was dual snorkels and a symmetrical look. The passenger side got so crowded near the front with the AC and heater lines and bulkhead fitting I decided to go with a single snorkel and the asymmetrical "turbo" look. The picture in my mind says it will look pretty good but the non symmetrical look is a first for this old school guy. Also the top will bring in some body color(both of them) the design yet to be decided, to get a tiny bit of the newer LS engine cover vibe. The oval sides and the snorkel will be polished.

Awesome! Is Speedbumpauto your company? It's also neat how you have it on your valve covers

Re: Ideas for an air cleaner?

Thanks for the kind words. I ran out of talent at the last picture. It has to taper 1/2 inch over the length of the box and I couldn't figure out how to do it and keep the radius sides that pristine, so I gave it to a tubing wizard here before I ruined all my progress. As soon as we get that 1/2 inch out and the hood closes, I'll send more pics of the progress. I hope it turns out as good as the picture in my mind. The wizard says "piece of cake" but talent can do that sort of thing.
Denee, Speedbump Auto is my retired, beer money, keep me out of the bar business. I do street rod engines, turnkey, for people, mostly old stuff like flatheads, Studebakers, Y blocks, 348/409's, etc. The stuff you can't buy in a crate. I work at my own pace(slow) so my customer base is small and that's the way I like it. The moderately equiped shop is in the back yard.

Re: Ideas for an air cleaner?

nice work speedbump, interesting use of tubing.
i wouldn't taper it, i would lower the front the 1/2''

interesting use of tin foil feeler gauge too
everyone is looking at that tin foil log in the 3rd picture and saying wtf?

"i wouldn't taper it, i would lower the front the 1/2''

That's the current plan but on the first mock up the lowered front hit the fuel injector rail on the FAST unit. Thinking now that a little massaging to the underside, which can't be seen, will give the clearance. At least the throttle linkage of the front throttle body cleared by about a 1/16 inch.

My new air cleaner!;)

I met my UPS man at the door like a little kid! I knew is was my air cleaner! When I went to install the lower part, I really became worried that the large HEI distributor cap was going to interfere, it was close, just had to reposition some spark plug wires, but it fits fine and it's gorgeous and even matches my valve covers!
Ah, the simple things in life!

thanks for everyone's help~!!
