Re: 1965 C10 Long Bed
I started up my '69 c30 that had been sitting for at least 10 years maybe 15 the same way. What a great sound/feeling!

Re: 1965 C10 Long Bed
So far I know the build thread 8s kinda boring because everyone wants to see the meat of the project. I dont own a shop and im working in my side yard, driveway and my garage. Basically my garage is my shop. Cant leave the truck out to long because of HOA. So at one point it will end up in the garage once I start tearing into the suspension.
The heat was whipping on me this morning. I managed to get the rear bumper off and all the bolts cut to remove the bed. Also I forgot to say that I have my upper bag plates and step notch. And with the questioning of keith about swapping the rearend. He led me to just doing axel swap to save a whole lot of work. And the help from jason on finding the kit he used for maggies build. This is the direction I will be going instead of swapping the rearend. Still not finished for today. Im cooling down and will be back out getting the bed off and pressure washing the crap out the back half.

Re: 1965 C10 Long Bed
That's it for today. Getting hot and got to get out of the heat. Pulled the bed and pressure washed the back half. Removed the helper leaf springs and backed it up to the garage.
Now I can see for certain my rear is a 12 bolt. Also found a stamp on it. Anyone have an idea of what it can tell you? HE 12 0 W And the last odd thing I found. Look at the cross brace the pan hard bar attaches underneath. That brace is at a strait angle? Took a tape measure to it and it is 3/4" off from the upper shock mount cross brace. Is this normal? Kinda scared me at first thinking my frame was tweaked. But it's not. Everything else is square. Just that one brace is at an angle lol. It is a factory rivet holding all braces on the frame as well. Maybe it's on purpose or it was installed crooked.

Re: 1965 C10 Long Bed
Those braces are installed at an angle fron the factory. There is a thread on here that identifies the rearend. I was reading it last week. I know for sure its no a 70' model. I can't find it right now thought I bookmarked. Member 60-66 on this forum helped indentify mine as a 12 bolt out of a 70' with 3.07 gears. Mine got swapped at some point. I'm not happy about the gear ration but do like the 30 splines axles.
I don't think your build is boring. We all have to start somewhere. I find the beginning condition of each truck to be interesting. It looks like you have all the stock stuff still attached on your rear. Keep the pics and progress coming. I just finished reassembling my rear checkout my build thread. Bret

That rear end code: HE 120W is:
HE 3.73:1 gear non-posi 65-69 (in a Long Wheel Base, (C15 in the VIN #)) (Short Wheel (C14 in the Vin #) base would be HA) 120 Built on January 20th W at Warren Gear By the way, nice project so far!

Re: 1965 C10 Long Bed
That crossmember that is set at a slight angle is done to keep the frame from being able to collapse like an accordian.
It is an engineering thing...

Re: 1965 C10 Long Bed
Monday I started getting some of the thick grime off my front crossmember to get it ready for the pancake.
Also pressure washed it. Now if friday looks good. I may start drawing out my lines. Working nights now. Scared myself tonight. I was walking in some knee high grass and fell. After I fell, I noticed a piece of pipe stick8ng out of the ground that went right by my neck and face. It was a scarey flash and chills shot down my back. You never know whats or when its going to happen. Here is the pipe. It is about a foot out of the ground. |

Re: 1965 C10 Long Bed
Well I couldnt wait to start my crossmember. So before work tonight I cleaned it off a bit. Marked it up on the front and cut half the front so far. Need to weld a brace on it now before moving on.

Re: 1965 C10 Long Bed
Didnt cut more today. I wanted to order my 5 lug conversion for the rear from CCP. However when I pulled the pan off my rearend I noticed the spider gears are worn and the drift pin al9ng with it.
Talked to Jason for a few minutes and then took off to auto parts stores hunting. Ended up going to Pyle Brothers and they had the whole set in stock. So needless to say I can order my CCP parts now since I got my new spider gears. Ill post a few pics later.

Re: 1965 C10 Long Bed
Ok if my 65 c10 rear serial says it is a 3.73. What tooth pinion does it use?
im looking at the ring gear and it says 41 on it. Thats same number teeth as the 3.42 gear rearend I was going to use until the information about using my stock rearend. Can it be a 3.42 also? Anywho... here are the images of the worn spider gears.

Cleaned up the inside of the rearend a bit. Also here are a couple pics. One is the nasty brakes and the other is the new spider gears.

Re: 1965 C10 Long Bed
At work today.... Just waiting on CCP to open so I can place my order for the 6569Rack.
5 Lug rear conversion kit. Also looks like I will be ordering another step notch. The one I have does not have the bends in it. The place I got it from said it will work. It is a universal step notch. Meaning you got to make it fit. All a bunch of BS to not give me my money back or the right notch. He goes further to say. This is the notch we use. I went further and said. Well this is not the notch thats required for these trucks and im not going to rig up some strait plates angled across the frame. Thorbros wont answer the phone. And I left message with no return call. So where can I get the correct step notch without more BS

Re: 1965 C10 Long Bed
Ordered the 5 lug conversion kit from CCP. Only thing I did not like about my experiance with CCP is the sales person could not give me a total price. Only ended up with an estimated total cost. I wont see the real cost for 5 or so days when I get billed for my order. Usually you know the total cost when you order something. I hope there is no problems getting my order.

Re: 1965 C10 Long Bed
Porterbuilt has a notch, CPP might but not entirely sure. Thorbros is having trouble keeping up with demand. Last I heard they were down to 4 people doing the work of 20.
