Re: 28 Model A
I was running into clearance problems with my spring over configuration so I ended up changing it over to a spring behind setup. Cut the old brackets off the axle and welded up some new ones. I ended up using the old brackets as lower shock mount brackets so everything worked out pretty good. Here's what i got for the spring relocation project:
These pics are when I was getting the brackets properly spaced and aligned: Since this was an afterthought the rear crossmember wasn't going to work in the shape it was as it barely contacted the frame anymore: Here's how it ended up: More to come! |

Re: 28 Model A
Looks great, good job on the fabrication. My 82 year old father and I are building a '29 roadster pick up. It is shaping up very slowly but it will be a nice rod when done.
This is roughly how we got it 12 years ago. This photo was taken after we took the fenders off. They were glass and we got nice Brookville steel to replace.

Alright, just about caught up on this. Here's where i was fitting my new wheel patch panels. Can see my re-purposed spring brackets being used as lower shock brackets here. Always envisioned the parking brake in the form of a lever mounted under the dash in the middle. An early 40's lever out a chevy ended up fulfilling the vision. Works great. Bought a stainless tank from speedway but it lacked a sending unit and i wanted it to fill from the outside. Didn't like the center outlet on the bottom much either as it was lined up with the highest part of the rear axle. So I got a sending unit from bob drake and a tight stainless mandrel bend to make a filler tube with. Also, I made up a piece to mount the sender and fuel pick up tube on. U-bend piece: Ready to weld additions on: Was making sure the gauge was actually going to work. It did!: Here's the sending unit part of it welded up, was worried it was going to warp alot but it ended up being fine. To finish up i removed the filler from the cowl with the plan to move it to the back. This is the first time i tig welded a patch into sheet metal and man oh man was it nice. Before welding: After: This is after it was ground down. Its not nearly as nice as the picture makes it look as there are some flaws and a little more hammer work to do, but it turned out miles better than just about every mig'd patch i've ever attempted and it was done in a fraction of the time. More to come! |

Re: 28 Model A
Aye man, judging by the rear mounted tank you know the struggle of patching that area all to well. There are some tough bends to conquer there which go slightly beyond the capabilities of the english knee. Hammer and dolly helped me ton.

Re: 28 Model A
The last big projects before final welding were exhaust and floor. I have no pictures on the ol' photobucket of the exhaust right now so here's some of how the floor ended up. All the panels except for a select couple are hammered to the framework with some self tapping sheet metal screws for now.
Then it was separation time. First step was to finish welding the southern side of the floor. After I finished that I took some pics Pushed the body out of the way and started the teardown on the frame. Seems I only took 2 similar pictures of that. Frame made its way onto a rotisserie for ease of welding some of the trickier to get to bits. The game plan for the final frame welding involves alot of jumping and skipping around. Here's some welds in progress that turned out okay. All will be welded solid in the end. Last edited by Desperado454; 06-06-2016 at 03:37 AM. |

Re: 28 Model A
After I got the frame all welded up I figured it would be a good idea to see if it was still square and level, so off the rack it came.
Sure enough it was a little twisted, was out about 1/4" front to back. Ive never straightened a frame before but I knew I had chains somewhere and a jack, so all I needed was an anchor point of some sort. After a quick scan I saw a potential idea. I'm sure there's alot wrong with this approach but I did achieve success. Anyways here's what became of my potential idea. So with that out of the way it was time to start making my way towards the finish. Put 'er back on the apparatus and spent the day grinding filling and sanding. Hope to be painting tomorrow |

Re: 28 Model A
Very nice! Sometimes you have to do what you have to do! I will probably have to do the same with my 40 frame. I doubt i'll have a frame jig by then. Haha

Re: 28 Model A
I'm late for the party but I'm here now. I love builds like this where you take something that wasn't designed to work together and cut, shape, and weld it into something different. Thanks for sharing and keep up the great work.
