Re: 1958 3200 Long Bed 5.3l/Jag IFS
WOW. Gorgeous work so far.
I could not for the life of me get the LS / 4L60E to work with the cab mount cross member and wound up axing it. Oh well - it was bent up pretty badly anyway... Do you have any pics closer up of the trans squeezing past it? I someday might be doing a 2.0 buildup of my truck and would want to replace some of that lost structure.

Re: 1958 3200 Long Bed 5.3l/Jag IFS
The front of the transmission pan is close to the rear of the cab crossmember but it does clear. I will try to get an image for you when I have the opportunity. The motor is absolutely as far back as it will go. One of the fuel rail ends is less than a quarter inch from the firewall. We had to add a small hump to the trans tunnel area and shave down one of the coil pack mounts and brackets on the passenger valve cover.
Edit: I just went out a grabbed a quick image for you. ![]() Last edited by NoClassic; 11-16-2014 at 12:54 AM. |

Re: 1958 3200 Long Bed 5.3l/Jag IFS
That should handle nicely with the weight midship.
Thanks for clarifying, kind of confirms what I thought. I could go back another 2" or so if there's a next time, but that cross member doesn't seem like it will let the transmission come out without the engine (which is why I cut it out of mine)

The motor and trans would have to come out together for sure.

Re: 1958 3200 Long Bed 5.3l/Jag IFS
The fuel lines, brake pedal, charging system/grounds, steering, and shifter are now done. I have been busy with some other work, but my dad started preparing the steering wheel for paint and doing some stuff to the interior. Today he got the cowl vent system back in and started covering the kick panels in carpet.
Monday I should have time to drill for the engine harness grommet and start to get it in for the final time. The chassis harness will likely start to go in at that time as well |

The engine harness is in and we started with the chassis wiring yesterday. We hope to have it all wired by the end of next week.

Re: 1958 3200 Long Bed 5.3l/Jag IFS
Everything but the gauges and column are now wired inside the cab.The cab rear wall also got insulation and carpet. My Dad started filling some cracks in the steering wheel and it is now ready for paint.
I also did the long chassis harness runs down the frame rails and wired up the fuel pump and sending unit. Yesterday we had the power steering lines crimped and got those installed. Next we need to work out the coolant hoses and fuel filler neck. |

Re: 1958 3200 Long Bed 5.3l/Jag IFS
The rebuilt steering rack had a leak even before pressurizing it, but it finally came back today. That allowed us to go ahead and start the motor. Oil pressure was good and no strange sounds or smoke. We put the front body panels and core support together and should have it on by the end of the week. With the radiator in place we can then move on to plumbing the cooling system.

Re: 1958 3200 Long Bed 5.3l/Jag IFS
We installed the cab to fender seals and put the front panels on today. I started mocking up the coolant hoses and intake with some scraps we had. A new turn signal switch came in so my Dad wired that up.

Re: 1958 3200 Long Bed 5.3l/Jag IFS
I painted the exterior portion of the cab steps and undercoated the inside of them today. I need to figure out a way to distress the new paint so it looks more like what is there. The intake tubing and couplers showed up so I started cutting and putting that together. I should have the hole cut for the intake pass through tomorrow. I am still debating if I should just fabricate aluminum radiator hoses or spend the time searching for something with a shape that will work.

Re: 1958 3200 Long Bed 5.3l/Jag IFS
I just now finished up cutting the inner fender for the intake tube and my dad did the rest of the carpet.
It also looks like we are going to have to repaint the step areas as the paint does not match well at all. ![]() ![]() |

Re: 1958 3200 Long Bed 5.3l/Jag IFS
Wow -
this really is a road map of what I want to do when I get the T, E & S (time, energy & skill) for a second build. Thanks for sharing!

Re: 1958 3200 Long Bed 5.3l/Jag IFS
The heater box, heater hoses, firewall insulating pad, and seat went in over the weekend. The outlet plenum was plastic and in bad shape so I will need to fabricate one to match up with the ducts.
I started wiring up the gauge panel this afternoon along with figuring out the seat belt mounting locations. The gauge surround is autometer with VDO gauges in it. ![]() ![]() ![]() |

Re: 1958 3200 Long Bed 5.3l/Jag IFS
The radiator is from a seller on ebay out of California. The shroud is from a 55 F100 with filler pieces/brackets that I made to fit it to the radiator.

Re: 1958 3200 Long Bed 5.3l/Jag IFS
My dad wired the headlights and front turn signals along with finishing the seat belt install. The weatherpack stuff showed up so I finished wiring the gauges. The wiper motor is dead so its getting sent off for a rebuild. I had read about using CLR to remove some of the more superficial rust and paint oxidation. I am really surprised with the result so far. Its going to be time consuming to do the whole thing, but looks like it will be worth the effort.

How did you apply the CLR? Shop towels or brush?
