Here's the ole '71 Custom Camper 20 Cheyenne/Huntsman combo we had for many years, I'm sure you all are familiar with:

This was the north end of Kit Carson National Forest near Chama,NM, I believe

Roadside New Mexico fixin' some breakfast


I think the only view inside is on a video I have on VHS. It had cherry veneer paneling, salmon colored stove, sink, coolerator, original curtains had duck, deer, elk, etc hunters on them (last picture), and the cushion upholstery was kind of a burnt orange burlap type fabric. I had new covers made in a goldish brown similar fabric with saddle vinyl backs (zippers) and the curtains were plaid. I'd describe the plaid but I'm starting to sound like an interior decorator

Dig the "map-table" in post 32, I'd forgotten about those. My neighbor has a 71-72 c30 chassis mount camper I've been thinking about going over and talking to him about. It'd make a great flatbed if the camper is shot was my thought. And probably a factory bigblock

I wish I still had it. We weren't using it too often as a camper and I had to put into work detail a while one year. The white paint had gotten so thin it was surface rusting and was getting worse for wear. It was where I was wanting to restore it before it got too far along. I always wished the set-up would allow for towing and my two older kids had moved out, so I decided on some changes. I had a no option '71 shortbed to build and I decided to build a Cheyenne using the camper truck. I had the Highlander K/20, Cheyenne Super K/20, and the Sierra K2500 and the plan was to put a low-profile (pop-up) slide-in that went to the back of the bed so I could tow, go off road, and easily mount kayaks,etc on top. I wanted an adventure machine for my youngest son and I to explore in. Well, I got the shortbed put together and ready for paint, had it stored for the winter in a friend's barn, it burned down, and insurance wouldn't cover any of the automotive contents. Then came the need to sell some stuff due to a divorce and the idea of a dedicated 4wd adventure machine went out the window when the other two 4wds got sold. Oh well, Maybe later.
I'm just glad I bought that thing and gave my family the experiences we shared. We will always have those memories.

Hi There:
I am a new member from Canada and just wanted to share these pics with you fellow Camper Lovers. This is a 1967 Vanguard 9.5 which was built in Richmond BC. I have never seen any pop ups like this online, but have seen Vanguard over cab with similar stripe package and inside decor. I am sure this was designed to compete with the Alaskan from USA. The Vanguard model is raised with a cable system. I was fortunate enough to find this in the Maritime Provinces not far from home. This unit is in unbelievable condition for the year and needs in most part elbow grease and new curtains which I have done. ( Cushions are original and in new condition ). An $800 steal I think. Hope you enjoy and a Very Merry Christmas and Happy New Year to you all..

Here are a few pictures of the "Huntsman" that was on my '70 Chevy. I sold it to member "Dieselwrencher" for his 4x4 Longhorn. This has not been restored and the oven had never been used.... It was put on the truck when it was fairly new because the take-off tailgate I got with it was in really good shape.

I never met the original owners but I talked to their son (who I bought the truck off of) and he told me that they took quite a few trips in it when he was a young man. In later years it was driven 60 miles to the state fair and parked there for a week, driven back home and put back in the shed until next year.

hello, and welcome to the site. that is one fine example you have there. I'm familiar with Vanguard and they built top quality campers for sure. boy would I love to have that one for my '72 4wd.

I know you and I have talked about it before, but does everyone else see that Lock Doc's and my camper were both Huntsmans? Mine was a more economical edition. Just a bit smaller, no bathroom, single sink, etc. I've only seen maybe 4-5 huntsman campers ever.

Welcome PC'ian, really like your camper. Vanguard looks a little like an Alaskan to me - both are great styles.

Hot ziggity, that is one nice camper! I found a reasonably close company that can make a camper shell similar to mine, except that I'll probably get a cab over style, to shade the cab. I'll probably also install a flap in the front to divert the air and rain away from the boot while driving. I have a piece of rain gutter in the gap, as my father in law stuffed shower curtains in between to reduce the leakage in the boot, which it really didn't, just kind of funneled it around. I shudder to think how much corrosion I'm going to find when that shell and boot are removed. Since the whole rig came to me free, I guess I can't complain too much. This last rainstorm, I got water in the camper again, even with a tarp across the top of it. I think I've finally worn the wife down on "repairing" what we have. The thing is just junk at this point, and I told her there are two options- a new shell, or I pull it all out and put in a back window, and no more camper, end of story. My father in law put a closet pole across the inside to hold the roof up, because the structure is so rotten. I laid all kinds of caulk on the outside of it to reduce leaks, but there is only one real solution at this point- replace it.

I had a boot that fit in the window opening. I never had any water leak problems. Now those jalousie windows, they were another story. They were needing resealed or replaced with something else. I couldn't believe my '71 never had a sliding window. I put one in and removed the fixed window (made a frame to trim it). the Coast to Coast rv catalog also had inflatable rings for that area, as well as another made for between the top and camper to stabilized/cushion. I figure that would help keep a lot of water from forcing into the area between the cab and camper. Never did get one,though.
