Supercharger for my Apache

While I was degreeing the cam in my new engine I decided to build a proper timing indicator.

Then I added some additional marks to the balancer.

Did you make the mark with a bit in a vertical mill?

Yes, I am using a balancer for a 250 engine and it had a TDC notch already (the one with the square bottom) so I built my indicator accordingly. Then I added 6 more notches at 2 degrees each with my rotary table and mill.

It is safety wire. The bolt I have is AN spec with a safety wire hole in it so I decided to use it. I drilled a 3/32 hole in one of the spokes to tie it to and used .041 safety wire. Not really necessary but, "what the hell".

Pretty cool though. I zoomed in on the pic of the wire and couldn't see it running through the bolt head.

While I was building the timing pointer it occurred to me that since the belt grooves are machined into the inertia ring on the damper I might have a problem. I was wondering if the extra load of the supercharger might make the inertia ring (i.e. the pulleys) slip on the hub. I talked the situation over with my son who has been building and tuning Indy Car and Daytona Prototype engines for 30 years and one of my best friends who is a master automotive machinist. The consensus was maybe, probably, and eventually. I decided it would be much easier to deal with it now instead of later so I designed and built a "harmonic damper snubber".

I bolted an aluminum disc to the inertia ring with 6 10-32 screws. Then oversize holes (9/16") were drilled in the disc for the 3/8" hub bolts. Then "O" rings were placed over the hub bolts to take up the space and provide a cushion if the inertia ring ever does slip. The theory is that if the load is to great for the elastomer ring between the hub and the pulleys the snubber will catch it before the elastomer ring is damaged. I hope it works!

Now that I have my crank pulleys sorted out I can get back to work on my supercharger mount. I had to make another mounting plate because I didn't realize that the front head bolt is offset 5/32nd's of an inch when I made the first one. I tried to enlarge the holes but couldn't get it to fit properly. It was also a chance to make a couple of other changes. That 3/8" hot roll is giving my old yard sale band saw a workout.

The balancer snubber is a good idea. I didn't consider the potential load on the ring / pulleys. Well, actually I haven't noticed pulleys incorporated into the balance ring due to my lack of knowledge on these engines. Again a fun learning experience for me.

Nice triangulation on the mount. Do you have any concerns about the load on the lower bolt?

Good question! Since the top plate is 3/8" steel I don't think there should be much deflection in it plus the bolt is 3/8". That's the good thing about these old engines, all the hardware is heavy duty. Also, I am planning on putting another brace in the back once I get the manifolds mounted. Better safe than sorry. I am more concerned about the load on the belt since I am going to be running the supercharger and the alternator on it. I'm not looking for much boost so maybe it will be okay.

A friend was looking at the supercharger mount yesterday and asked me how I aligned the pulleys. I came up with an idea several years ago using my laser bore sighting tool and thought some of you might be interested too.

Mine is an inexpensive generic unit. You can buy them all over the internet for about $30 or less. When I worked at a chassis shop building drag cars I machined a piece of plastic to fit in the tail housing of an empty powerglide transmission we used for mock up and inserted one in it. Once the engine and transmission were mounted I could measure and square everything on the chassis and rear suspension with it.

It was a good afternoon in the shop today. I built and installed a new alternator mount to work with the supercharger drive. Because I have to lay the alternator out horizontally to tension the belt I had to raise it up to clear the motor mount. I was also able to get the belt tensioner mounted for the blower belt.
