I agree that there is a valid argument to both sides of the coin. However, unless it is a truck that can bring top dollar stock, I wouldn't bother keeping it stock unless that is the look you like. Lets face it, an original truck will never bring the kind of money that a numbers matching Vette or muscle car from the sixties will bring. Odds are, if you do alter or change your vehicle from stock, it won't affect the value if you ever decide to sell it. I know I'm gonna get slammed by you purists out there but changing your stock truck will not affect the value if it's done tastefully. Take a 34 Ford Coupe or 2 door sedan for example: This vehicle is worth more as a street rod with all the modern stuff like power windows, disc brakes and A/C. I've seen them sell for 20 or 30 thousand bucks and have yet to see a bone stock one sell for that kind of money.
Let's hit closer to home. I bought my 67 1/2ton 4x4 for $2800. It was totally stock in appearance and the only thing not factory was the big block that came out of a 66 Chevelle SS. Now that I have modified my truck, I get offers all the time for between $8,000 and $12,000. It would have never brought that kind of money if I left it stock. Granted, I do have a lot into it and may never get out of it what I have invested. Then again, maybe I will. I'm sitting at about $9,300 invested but I don't plan on seling it anytime soon. The moral of this story is (like so many others have said) do what makes you happy. If you like the stock look, go for it. If you like the stock look, but like a modern drivetrain, go for it. If you like them altered to the hilt, go for it. Just keep us posted on your progress because we love them 67-72's no matter how you fix them up!

Ok, I think I'm gonna go with a stock exterior with a modern interior(power windows and locks and bucket seats), and a slightly modified engine. That way I have the stock look that I love with a modern comfortable interior for long trips(and plenty of power).

My truck has a stock suspension....stock tranny.....stock paint scheme and color....stock interior (with a CD player and hacked dash), decent wheels and tires, and a engine that is about 1/2 way stock. I like it this way...it looks stock, sounds mean, plenty of power, and turns heads when it starts up. I like the idea of keeping the exterior stock, then building up a nice aftermarket drivetrain so the truck can outhandle, outaccelerate, and look better than any new truck. A/C and other power options are nice...but i still don't see the need for power windows in one of these trucks
When i do a frame off on mine (like 5 years from now...lol) i am planning on doing just that, stock exterior, lowered suspension, nice wheels and tires, sway bars front and wheel, maybe 4-wheel discs, and a nice small block in the neighborhood of 400 ponies along with a overdrive tranny....of course that will cost a whole lot but it is my current idea for my ride... Still, do whatever you want to it. It is your truck......restore it or hack it up...or a combo of both.

Let's be realistic although our trucks are growing in popularity, they are not pullin down $80,000 at BARRET JACKSON.
To be honest here in the southwest auto trader they have stockers pullin $5-10K and some customs I have seen for over $27,000. Point being until these trucks reach the mystic of the COPO camaro, or 57 chevy ect. Do what you want.

I guess I am one of the rare original/stock freaks! I did my first and only real " project" over 11 years ago. A 72 black/black swb cheyenne super 402 ,buckets,am-fm,,,,,,,,spwarning, shoulder harness. Put back 100% stock, well as close as I could get it. I'm talking recading the bolts to keep correct pattern and chalk marks on the frame. Ok, you have no choice when your dad/resto partneris a 2x bloomington gold winner. On the other hand it wasn't a '67 435hp one of a few ,more like 1/700,000+ i think for 1972. So yes I did add a few of the top options, but only if it could have come on a truck in 1972. I think a wood bed is the only option I didn't have, well the only one I wanted-that I didn't have. Cause I could not justify spending all that dough only to have the wood painted body color, whichI would of had to do.
$$$ wise I was in it about 15,500 , and that was the good ole days when my outer grill shell was $127.46 at old Modern Chevrolet. And way before that thing called the internet(((huge price booster))). Sadly I got corvette fever sold her in93. (Insert crying,yelling, pouting, smilies). Horrible disease!!! I did get 16 for it tho.Customized trucks are more popular by ten/one no Question, but In my opinion, which you shouldn't take too seriously, From an investment point of view, You would have to mega bucks in it to bring the kind of money that some of those custom trucks bring. oh well i got to drive it ( in perfcet weather) about 5000 miles over a couple years and have no regrets. Except for the fact that the cheyenne super pro that gave the pointers said in that condition today it would bring 25 thou. (insert various smilies) But DO NOT do it from a $$$ view or you won't enjoy it. I should of just drove the damn thing and not worried about it loosing it's "value" it would of still been worth something today at least to me. Picture a truck that makes you smile every time you think about it. And build it exactly like that, and don't listen to anybody else, expecially me. |

I will never be selling it. It has been in the family since new. I don't really care which way would be worth more, I just don't want to totally ruin a good truck by doing something stupid. It's not like it's a cheyenne super or a rare truck, it's just a '72 Custom Deluxe 20.

The Cab is TOTALLY savable.
Just make a channel and have a piece of glass cut and sink it flush like the newer chevy trucks. I thought about doing that mod anyway, just to get rid of that BULKY rubber around the rear glass. I still might. HMMMMMMMMMMMMM
