Re: Green Beater

So today's update is brought to you by the word "rework" as in i didn't do it right the first time.

for starters had to replace the speedo cable because i routed it wrong and exhaust gets hot...who knew?

next up was completely redoing the rear brakes because this genius right here didn't replace the wheel cylinders even though he knew better. This time we replaced everything inside of the drums. drums have been resurfaced

third in line was once again to replace the passenger side header gasket. 5th times a charm maybe.... keeps blowing in between center exhaust ports. may change out to my other set of beefier headers i have see if that helps

last in line was replacing the 8 month old starter that likes to work only when it feels like it. New one seems more eager to please.

Re: Green Beater

tried to fix my speedometer problem this weekend by buying a used 30 buck 1980 100mph speedo but turns out it don't really work. don't think the seller intentionally sold me a bad one was just in his shed to long. i took alot of pictures but am not going to post them as the project was a flop.

i did also pull my passenger side header as it had blown the gasket at the center ports again. a little grinding on the outer edges of the center ports and some checking with a straight edge was my quick fix. so far so good. put 50 miles on it yesterday and no signs of leaking. seated the gaskets same as always with a heat cycle and a retorque. time will tell.

while i had the header off i rerouted some of the wiring and cleaned up the appearance on passenger side also.

Re: Green Beater

Go to nearest speedo shop and buy something. Take receipt to court to verify broken speedo and fix. Usually gets it wiped. Good luck!

Did not get my block back today so no work will get done on it this weekend. Plus my connecting rods will not be here for about another week.

Re: Green Beater

Got my block back today. Looks like new... i love new parts. Now to start the assembly process. What I have is a completely bare block so cam bearings then core plugs, plasti-gauging and what not. The what not is my most favorite part.

Have to get my shed straightened out and the block up on the engine stand. Then away we go

Re: Green Beater

Got the cam bearings installed into the block and after another day of hunting for mounting head finally got it on the stand 3/13. took a grinder to it and removed some of the casting flash from it. Proceeded to get a piece of it in my eye which i had removed by eye doctor today. that sucked.

dropped pistons and rods off at machine shop to be assembled today along with the crankshaft for polishing.

Re: Green Beater

PRW chrome moly roller tip rockers in a 1.52 to 1 ratio. Got the set new for $100. Should be a nice upgrade over factory stamped rockers.

the engine in the truck now was never intended to be a permanent replacement. i did a quick hone the block and slapped rings and bearings in it. As such it has problems like only 20 psi oil pressure when warmed up at hwy speed. I am sure due to excessive bearing clearance. i cut to many corners on first engine so i could keep the truck on the road. trying not to do that this time.

Re: Green Beater

have not done much with truck or engine lately. assembled the crank into the block today after plasti gauging it. Main studs are so much nicer to work with than bolts.

Re: Green Beater

Do you need to clearance the block for the timing chain?

Just a heads up, if you haven't.
