Re: Great Grandads '53 3100

Got the inners trimmed and installed. Thanks Jim and AD for the help. Here's a pic of thermostat housing on the water pump. I guess i could cut out more of the inner fender to make room for the bend, but I wonder if it comes in other angles. Curious what others did to solve this.

You can get them in a swivel neck too. You almost need it at 90 degrees down

Cant you just unbolt it and flip it around and bolt it on the other direction? The angle of the bolt pattern looks like it would clock downwards that way.

Re: Great Grandads '53 3100

Haven't made much progress lately as its been cold here.

I did get some work done on the trans tunnel and modified the trans cover. Pretty happy with it seeing as this was the first time I've done any welding.

Since its been cold I decided to dive into the harness. You can see the shop I got the motor from cut one of the looms to an O2 sensor as well as the one the MAF.

Looks like a good start at learning how to weld. Flux core? Are you making the trans cover removable?

Not a whole lot. I've lost motivation on the Harness. Its closer but still not done. In all reality that doesn't really matter since i'm struggling to find someone to flash my PCM. I've tried to get a hold of a local guy as well as the guy at LT1 Swap to ask them a question or two but cant get a email or call back from either. If you guys have any suggestions just let me know.

I did mount the fenders just to see how things looked and picked up some wheels and tires. 275/40/20 on the rear and 245/45/20 on the front.

I did notice I've got a pretty big gap on my drivers side fender. Grandad and I patched this area 20 or so years ago. I don't think we ever mounted the fender to see how things lined up. looks like I'm going to need to coerce that out a bit.

Coming along nice. What a-arm and spindle kit did you use with that speedway crossmember?

Thanks BigRick. Here's the link to the kit i used. http://www.speedwaymotors.com/Mustan...les,35674.html

Also managed to get my tank setup this past weekend.

Anyone know where I can get a stubby filler neck? This is the one I got form Tanks however I'm thinking I'd like to hide the filler under the bed entirely so that its only accessible if you raise the bed. Thought that would be a cool trick and help show of the 4-Link. I guess if I cant find a shorter one I can always cut this one down but I'm not sure my welding skills will be up to the challenge.

Re: Great Grandads '53 3100

Tanks does have a 2 inch tall filler if that will work for you.

http://www.tanksinc.com/index.cfm/pa...prod/prd86.htm

If you do need to go through the floor and want a fuel bowl, a sink drain will work. I bought one from the local hardware store for $17 and lathed the center out of it. It was chrome plated brass (I think) and it seperated into the lower retainer and the upper visible bowl. The threaded end was long enough to protrude through the hole in the bed board for the screw on retained flange to hold it in place.

Great build so far! The speedway suspension kits turned out very well. Be confident in your welding skills and tackle the filler neck shortening task, you might surprise yourself. Every top notch welder once knew nothing so just experiment with scrap pieces of metal as often as you can in varying positions. Good luck and keep up the great work!

Thanks Fish! Appreciate the words of encouragement.

I began work on my steering column this weekend. Filled the factory offset so the shaft could be centered and did some test fitting.

The steering shaft is going to be interesting to say the least. Looks like its going to take 3 joints and a heim joint.

I may have missed something, but why do you need the PCM flashed? Great build, you've made a lot of progress in a pretty short amount of time. Keep it up!

The biggest thing is to have VATS turned off however there's also several other things I wont be running that can be turned off in the PCM. I did finally get in contact with a local shop that could take care of it. Hopefully they get it doe and can get it back by the end of the week. if so there's a chance it could run this weekend.

I appreciate the kind words on the build. I've honestly felt like its been going slow lately. It was pretty cold here for a while so getting out in the garage that was less than 40 degrees wasn't too appealing. Its been warming up as of late so its time to get back at it.

Ah yes, the beloved GM anti-theft system. I honestly believe it deterred more owners than criminals.

Great build with a great back story. Subscribed. The guy who re-flashed my ECM was very responsive and communicated effectively via email. He may be one of the guys you mentioned. At this time, I can't remember the name but it is buried in my thread if your contact does not work out.

Thanks Dug! You've got a great build going on as well. Looks like you used LT1swap.com which is one of the guys I had reached out to. I did finally get a hold of a local guy and should have it back in the next few days.

Re: Great Grandads '53 3100

Steering shaft is coming together.

Heim joint and mounting tab in place. I'll be sure to revisit the tab and make it a bit more aesthetically pleasing. Also installed the brake booster and pedal to see where things line up and to make sure there's enough space around the trans.

Also made progress on the harness today thanks to one of my childhood friends. Shooting for a fire up next Friday night.
