Re: 68 K20 GMC/Chevy
Good analogy on what you heard. I think I'll prep myself for people asking and not give a yes or no, just say "$25,000". Either we'll have something to talk about or conversation over . It sure isn't worth that, but I'd sure sell it for that, buy myself a nicer one, and go buy a hamburger with the change

Re: 68 K20 GMC/Chevy
So I laid a couple of sets of cab lights up there today to see what looked good. I like both, the more chromed ones were the ones I really liked when I was younger. The more stock looking ones are more to the way I leaned later. Gonna be a tough decision for me. I have a couple of threads bookmarked on where to drill and how to best feed the wiring through. Going to have to ponder this one.
I put some new door panels on today, the ones Grumpy Old Man made for me. I forgot I don't have the black armrests anymore (tan on there now) and I need two more black estuchens, Ill get the stuff from Wes, put them on and then post some pics.

Re: 68 K20 GMC/Chevy
Hmmm...... Eenie meenie miney mo. It's your decision that's fo' sho'.
I guess the later ones would be correct for the future front end, but a guy could put whatever he wanted on a truck that didn't come with them, and they did, and they still can

Re: 68 K20 GMC/Chevy
In the end its just going to be a mish mash of our trucks, but all one color. Not worried about it being totally stock.
I think Ill probably go with the more correct ones, They have LED lighting though. If they are a lot brighter than the rest of the lights Ill have to do some more figuring =)

Re: 68 K20 GMC/Chevy
I have some cab lights for my 72 but what I'm wondering is, do you run the wire down the B pillar, or is there an access hole to run the wires down the A pillar? From the research I've done, there doesn't seem to be any access point at the top of the A pillar inside the roof area.

Re: 68 K20 GMC/Chevy
There is a hole at the top of the left A pillar. I think there is a page in the assembly manual showing the factory setup. Where the dash attaches to the bottom of the pillar there is a round hole punched into one of the brace pieces. I'm guessing if the truck was speced with cab lights the hole in the actual A pillar was punched to give access?

Re: 68 K20 GMC/Chevy
All trucks have a way to pass the wire through the driver side windshield post. I did it years ago. I guess it was tedious, but I don't recall it being anything that difficult. TX Fireman did a video on a method he came up with. I believe it's in the FAQ forum.

Re: 68 K20 GMC/Chevy
Air is the same way electricians run wire down conduit. They actually have a little parachute birds they start into the conduit for long distance
You going to put different rear-view mirrors on that truck ? .

Re: 68 K20 GMC/Chevy
Yeah I don't see em much, but I had the same style on my last K20 so I think they were meant to be
I want to take the rear bumper, the seats minus the upholstery and the mirrors in to the sand blasters. I think that rear bumper is going to be tricky to get off.

Re: 68 K20 GMC/Chevy
might get lucky, but I'd start a regiment of soaking with your favorite "help it bust loose" product. Then there's always that thin little 4" round thing that loves to eat bolt heads.
I have a decent '72 step bumper I was thinking I'd like to get sand blasted soon. It has a slightest twist on one corner I think I can get straight, and need to do first. I got it at a junk yard a couple years ago. With minimal tools I didn't have anything for pulling it. I found a jack ratchet in a car that slips over the piece that goes into the jack, maybe lug wrench part? Anyway, it was the right size, 3/4" I think, and after borrowing a rubber floor mat from another vehicle, and not sure what held the other side (maybe a lug wrench) I managed to get that bugger off after a lot of effort, but the bolts weren't stuck. I think I did take some oil off a dip stick to help them along. After all that effort, especially carrying that thing out, I hope I can get that tweak out and have a decent bumper for very cheap. My plan is to have it chromed if I can get it perfect. If not, I'll sand blast and powder coat in argent, as factory

Re: 68 K20 GMC/Chevy
What is a Bus-type GM mirror look like?
These mirrors are aftermarket from back in the day arent they? Im sure they are, I had similar ones on my '65 . . . I had these factory stainless steel mirrors on a 69 ford f250 I had. Liked them

Re: 68 K20 GMC/Chevy
Im starting to get used to the lift, although its a bit of a hassle to hop in and out, I may just keep it. Im glad I didnt go out and buy new springs (although I have em picked out with my finger on the trigger lol) My wife and granddaughter have both ridden in the truck now and its kind of amusing watching them try to get in =)
If I do end up keeping it Ill look for a step up bar or some sort of handle. A step up bar I can sort of hide with paint, but a handle is pretty ugly unless I can figure out a way to mount it inside the cab.

Re: 68 K20 GMC/Chevy
nice wheels...things moving along nicely.
question for you...Will a 71/72 grill fit the 68/gmc fenders? or is it that they will fit but the difference will omly be noticed by the "trained eyes?" personally, I like the red on GMCs for some reson. I have guys tryng to buy my hobbies every so often. its a compliment and sometimes they try to employ the "point out the issues" tactic. I just smile and nod. thing is if the truck is mine i know where the diamonds are as well as the poop. lol cheers!

Re: 68 K20 GMC/Chevy
I'm not super versed on GMC grills and fenders if that's what you mean by 71/72.
If you are talking about Chevy, no they wont work. You need core support, fenders, latching mech, and hood from a 71/72

Re: 68 K20 GMC/Chevy
When people try the "point out flaws" tactic on me I end the conversation with "I guess you don't like it" and turn away. If I wanted to sell I'd say, "Won't affect the price". If at first look they see it, don't they think I have?
I had a paving contractor ask if for sale while at work on a house. I said, "This one is my keeper". He has no idea all the K/20s I've had or where I'm at in life. He said, "If I had that truck I'd restore it and it would never see a day of work". I said, "Been there done that. I'm enjoying this one". Best original with this shorty and have done over 10 or 12 (not including a few 1/2Ts) in the last 40 years Now I work this GMC's butt off and it thanks me I intentionally loaded it tail-end heavy for the hundred or so mile trip (incl. over two mountains) to help mate better with trailer. The hitch is in the Bartens bumper above the receiver, and I can't get a wrench on the nut. I mostly enjoy taking nice and mellow country back road drives in it going where I have to go, doing what I need to do. Just like back in '72! (when I was a kid driving a bug)

Re: 68 K20 GMC/Chevy
So after doing a whole lot of nothing really with the truck (messing around with the interior some) Ive decided that bent bumper is really bugging me.
Ive also decided what it is I just don't care for on the GMC grill ... Way too much chrome on there. I do have everything I need to change it to 71/72 Chev. But after looking at a ton of GMC pics I actually like the ones without the extra chrome on the hood and fenders. So do I take that chrome off of mine, fill the holes, and get a new bumper ... Or go through the hassle of swapping out the entire front end? Wonder what special-K will advise? Oh also, 505 green was my choice of color, but this vermillion (or whatever it is) is really growing on me. You don't see a lot of trucks this color.
