Re: 1985 gmc swb 305/700R MPG
Same engine converted to RPM intake, eddy 600cfm carb, ramhorn 2" manifolds and MSD Hei distributor with a 200-4R and 3.07 rear gears in my 79 never got better then 15mpg and that truck is at least 1000lbs lighter then my 98. Over the years I've learned some trucks just got the magic combo of tolerances from the factory to get great mileage and I finally found one.

Re: 1985 gmc swb 305/700R MPG
Tune tune tune, then tune some more. There are tricks and sweet spots for every combo. I've never had something I couldn't get respectable mileage from when you consider the total package.
All of us that are hard core aren't completely stuck on mileage, but I also like to get what a combo has to offer for the simple reason that I don't let gas prices dictate what I have to drive, so I make what I have respectable in the mileage department so I can continue to enjoy them. My opinion, anything that gets 14mpg or better is good enough and pretty much what I've driven all my life. So when I find a combo that gets 20 mpg I feel like I'm in a prius |

No, hardcore because we choose to drive classic vehicles rather than cookie cutter stuff, no matter what the gas prices or mileage is. Because of that I also tune and tweak to get what the vehicle has to offer.

Re: 1985 gmc swb 305/700R MPG
Yeah. My DD F150 gets 20-22 on the interstate, and K10 gets 14. That doesn't reign in my smiles while driving the old relic though
