Just one question--how are you going to get it to hookup so you can use all that HP? Can't get my 502HO to hook with a 3.08 Posi.

502

Sorry to hear about all your trouble. I have had a ZZ502/502 in my truck for four years now and could not be happier. It ran great right out of the crate and seems to be getting better with age, I did however get rid of the Holly carb it was a pain in the neck.

ya know...I dunno...I guess I will adress it later this year...would rather have the hp/tq and no traction than traction and no hp/tq I guess.

I do have to change the rear tires and put a posi in it....that will happen this year.

I have to agree with you on the 870 vac sec carb.....that is a pain.

I am really very excited to get the motor back...or should I say dynoed as well. I wouldn't be surprised to see 650 out of this thing....that would be great.

Shore is fun trying to get traction. I got the 850 vac. sec. carb on mine that GM sells. Runs fine -only changed the secondary spring(put one of the easy change kits on). Only problem with my motor is oil usage-1qt every 300 to 400 miles -no smoke anytime-no leaks but still goes some where. This is not a big problem with me as I have had it 3 years and only have 6,000 + miles on it. Oil usage has not changed from day one. Pace & GM says low tension oil rings--right. Still would buy another (572?). Good luck on your motor.

Thanks jhow. I can't wait to get it finished now. I heard about the oil usage...I didn't seee much with mine but honestly I didn't get a chance to drive it that much. It should be fun.

carbs

If you are just using it for the street use the one GM reccomends--850 Holley with vac sec. part # 0-80531. They sell it. If you want a little more try the Street Avenger 870 Part # 0-80870.

I agree from a performance standpoint but for a everyday driver you will be glad you have vac sec carb everytime you pass a gas pump.

It will be street/strip, I was thinking 850 double pumper. I run a 750 d/p now on the small block.

To control traction on the street there is a new gadget from MSD that measures crank acceleration. You calibrate it so that the crank is only allowed to accelerate up to a set rate. If it increases too quick the wheels are spinning. Has already been banned by NHRA as it is traction control.

Only two months before the 502 arrives....

68,

Sallee recommended the speed demon 850dp. Other guys I have communicated with said that a 900 to 1000cfm works even better on bigger heads say rectang ports...they were seeing 700hp and more with true valve openings at .700 or better. They were running full race fuel systems as well.

I have a 750DP on my 355 in my 56. Made it into a 4-hole idle carb with a rear block off a 850DP then drilled body. Works great.

Update 01/08/04:

Motor was put on the dyno and started today for break-in. Unfortunately I won't have a dyno sheet until next week. It looks like I will have the truck back by the end of the month.

Salle did tell me I will even get a video of the dyno which I thought was pretty cool.

Heres to hoping for 650HP.

JHOW it will be interesting to see how the oil consumption turns out....I believe they replaced my rings and file fit them....maybe this will make a difference.

I personally would not trust a GM crate engine without pulling it down and checking everything and I mean everything. I have three ZZ4 engines and I had major trouble with all of them. And they were not abused in any way. I thought it was the way to go, but so much for that. I'm so discouraged with them that I never even took the last ZZ4 apart. It has been sitting on the stand for awhile. Must just be my great luck....
