Re: 85 GMC dirt cheap refresh

Did some block sanding on the cab, then cleaned up the floor. I removed all of the old seam sealer and put some new stuff in there, removed the surface rust that was on the right floor, and went over my welds with some waterproof fiberglass filler incase there were any pin holes that I missed. After that was dry I sanded the floor down with some 80 grit, and shot a couple of heavy coats of dupont corlar high solids epoxy mastic.

Re: 85 GMC dirt cheap refresh

I had a little time in the shop tonight and got the cab back on the frame, and started getting some stuff bolted back on it. I cleaned the bottom of the cab up a little, and sprayed some undercoating on it before I bolted it down.

Thanks Mike! I'm not sure about powering it up, for now I just want to get whatever I can bolted on and out of the way so I can make room in the shop to get your front clip painted up.

Re: 85 GMC dirt cheap refresh

Well, the doors on this truck ended up being to rusty along the edge that had the door edge guards on them. So I pulled out a set of aftermarket doors I had sitting in the basement. The bummer about that, is that I had to bolt everything back on to the truck to find out what kind of work it will take to make the doors fit. The right door fits almost as good as the oem door, and after hogging out the bolt holes in the hinges to allow for more adjustment, the left door fits good as well. It took awhile took hang and adjust the doors and fenders, but I will make up some time by not having to fix the rust, and dents the factory doors have. It was also nice to see what the ride hight ended up at. It is a touch higher than I was hoping for, but it will work.

Great thread. I'm hoping to do something similar to my 87 Shorty. Looks great so far!

Re: 85 GMC dirt cheap refresh

Thanks guys! The ride hight was just a little higher than what I was shooting for, so I swapped out the 2/4 stuff for some 4/6 stuff to see how that looks. Much closer to what I'm after, but the front is a touch low for the more level look I want, so I'm going to swap out the 2" springs for some 1", and I think that will work perfectly.

Re: 85 GMC dirt cheap refresh

The 1" drop springs showed up today, and me and my oldest boy got them installed. I think I'm happy with the stance now. The truck is not perfectly level from side to side, so we had 3 diffrent sets of springs in there, and swapped springs side to side making sure that they were fully seated each time, and we are now positive that we do not have a spring issue, so somthing is a little tweaked somewhere, but it is within a 1/4" from side to side, so I'll have a little shimming to do to get the body level.

Re: 85 GMC dirt cheap refresh

I decided to see if I can repair my oem doors, if it doesn't turn out I can use the aftermarket doors, so I have nothing to loose. I am going to try and replace the rusted through door edge, and there is a small rusty spot at the bottom to fix. So far I bent a piece up, and have been working it in the shrinker to match the shape of the door. I think it's pretty close now, so I'm going to cut the edge of the door out, weld in the patch, and then fold the edge around. Hopefully without turning the door skin into a warped oil can!

Re: 85 GMC dirt cheap refresh

With the edge cut out, the door frame underneath is in perfect condition. New piece was cut to fit nice, and I'm using a damp cool rag next to the weld to help prevent warping.

Re: 85 GMC dirt cheap refresh

Thanks Marcus, so far it's working pretty good, the weld area sucked down just a touch, but the cool rag prevented any warping out in the middle of the panel, and that's what I was worried about. I hammered over the edge, and I'm more than happy with the progress so far.
