Re: 49 chevy 1433
I didn't order a column. I found a used one for 75 bucks. I just ordered the steering u joints and shaft and a support heim. That set me back about $300.00.

Re: 49 chevy 1433
Sorry not much for updates, life happens. Started working on a front panel for my box at work. I will post some pictures of that soon. I also finally bolted my intake manifold on but that's about it.

Re: 49 chevy 1433
nice work, thats how I "fixed" my fenders too, pounded out the dents and welded the cracks/tears. looked great and no need for a patch.
use a 88-98 bench, fits great and a lot of room. well a lot more than the stock bench, chewing on the steering wheel

Re: 49 chevy 1433
I don't know, I don't want to set myself a time frame, I think I would just let myself down. when I started this build I told wife it would be ten years, of the four years I have owned it I have really only worked on it for two and got more done than I expected but lately there hasn't been alot of extra time or money. I'm not giving up though.

Thank joedoh, I've gotten a lot of inspiration from your builds.

Re: 49 chevy 1433
I haven't worked on the truck for a while. I put a little time into my '97 short box, it really needed some attention and there never seems to be enough time for my toys but I got an oil change done and it needed a new water pump. It sat for a month waiting on the water pump. The catalytic converter was also rattling so I took care of that. Then gave it a good thorough cleaning and some wax.

Re: 49 chevy 1433
My box had no front panel, so I decided to build one.
I had some old bed frame side rails laying around and I bought a 4x8 sheet of 16 gauge steel quite some time ago so I figured what the heck.I used the front lower bed brace for the width got to cutting and welding.

Re: 49 chevy 1433
I tacked together a frame, corners were cut a 45 degrees, clamped everything together and made sure the box was sqaured. Then I drilled the bolt holes in the sides and welded the corners inside and out. Then i cut a panel out of 16 gauge and used the big spot welder at work to weld it into the frame.

Re: 49 chevy 1433
The welder is a Pro Spot I5 pressure resistantance spot welder. It is a full auto set machine and is really nice to have access too.
I think I'm pretty happy with how it looks. Just have to make new front floor brace now.

Re: 49 chevy 1433
I know its been quite some time since I have posted anything, but that doesn't mean the truck is forgotten. I work on it when I can but life happens a lot.
I made a new toe board panel out of 16 gauge steel. Seemed like the best way to get rid of all the holes.

Re: 49 chevy 1433
I also took care of the firewall. I cut out the recessed area of each side leaving about a 5/8" flange then driledl 5/16" holes that I plug welded from the inside. I will finish the seam with a small bead of seam sealer on the outside and then a little more generously on the inside.

Oh yeah. I also scored some nice Cragars this summer. I always wanted a set of these.

The firewall looks good. I may borrow that for the 54.
