Re: Going to the DYNO today

The engine builder/dyno operator is a retired Winston Cup engine builder; he's a wizard, but like you say, it's all carb and engine knowledge, no turbo knowledge. When they need HPTuners, I bring by mine. Literally :-) I'd love to have a knowledgeable BigStuff 3 Turbo tuner on hand, but I don't think there's any locals, and it's not a "serious" build where I'd fly someone in, that kind of thing.

Not sure I'd be too worried though, at least your guy is an experienced tuner and I'm sure his dyno is loaded with lots of monitoring/logging ability. Watch what it's doing, particularly AFR and fuel pressure of possible, and you'll be fine. Btw the big reason I used HP Tuners and turbo in my example is it's difficulty. Most are already in a vehicle and a stock ecu is more limited in what it can (potentially) datalog compared to an aftermarket ecu. An aftermarket ecu is also easier to get it to do what you want since there aren't as many tables effecting each other. Tell the ignition table you want 15 degrees in an aftermarket ecu and there aren't a dozen other tables saying "if I see X we're overriding that and going to to 25 degrees" like a stock ecu. Just an example but demonstrates the need for experience with certain ecu's and combinations. But if you and your tuner can get a stock ecu to do what you want I think you guys will be ok especially with an aftermarket ecu. Oh yeah and take my post with more than few a grains of salt. No real experience here besides looking through the free version of tuner studio. Just lots of reading, loads of Sloppymechanics videos and preparing for when I actually get my LS swap done and can get hands on. |

Re: Going to the DYNO today
Well guys It broke a piston. I attached a picture of the dyno graph as well. Power seems to drop off early. I'm guessing because of the broken piston. Any thoughts on what caused the break?

Re: Going to the DYNO today
were your ring gaps good, they expand when hot. maybe got to tight?

[QUOTE=HO455;7926576]What kind of
They were stock. I'm either gonna go with forged rods and pistons and rebuild it or do a forged 5.3. Last edited by 1moretoy; 04-26-2017 at 07:04 PM. |

Re: Going to the DYNO today
I thought they looked factory. You have exceeded the design capabilities of the stock piston. I would go forged with a turbo design to match your turbo size and do the rods too. Then you're good for some more boost if you want.

Re: Going to the DYNO today
Seems someone would have warned you about possible breakage of the stock components. At least now the rest of us are. Sorry for your loss. I run forged pistons in every engine I build. Race or not.

Re: Going to the DYNO today
Received some parts yesterday. I will be dropping off the block at the machine shop on Monday. I can't wait to get this thing back together. The parts are almost to nice to never be seen.

Re: Going to the DYNO today
Don't boosted engine require a larger ring end gap? Could be the reason it stressed the ring land as the ring expanded and it had nowhere to go.
