Re: 3 on the tree trouble shifting
Or you can do what I did on one of my trucks and find another member who has a used Mastershift and buy it cheap and rebuild it ,Then find the install kit (linkage) on ebay cheap and a new chrome shifter is $59.95 . Just another option .

Well it continues... got the truck on ramps this evening. Took the bushings out and darn if they didnt look new, swapped em out anyways. Noticed a whole lot of issues while under. Oil dripping from the pan gasket and oil dripping from the timing cover which leads me to ask wheres that coming from. Then also noticed the previos owner had bent this piece of metal back around the oil filter and tucked it between the header and frame. Looks like it was meant to go across the bell housing and bolt underneath the starter? Guess he forgot to bolt it up when he changed the starter? Also TONS of caked oil on everything.
But needless to say still no luck with this 3OT Posted via Mobile Device Last edited by SC1969c10; 08-15-2018 at 08:25 PM. |

Re: 3 on the tree trouble shifting
Yikes!
That's the upper cover that goes across right under the back of the block, in front of the flywheel. The starter goes thru the big hole.

Re: 3 on the tree trouble shifting
No , It's a dust/ debris cover there should be 2 pieces here is a pic of (2) sets . you can run without them on . you'll need to remove the oil filter to get to that top 7/16 bolt still holding it in place and just put a want to buy ad in the parts section to get replacements .

Re: 3 on the tree trouble shifting
Thanks Grumpy. Took the shift lever out and sprayed inside again, then double checked alignment and removed just a hair of play in the 2/3 lever. She shifted 1-2-3 smooth then got hung up shifting back into 1. Everything has been done except checking the actual fluid inside which I just couldnt do. Guess its on to my new mission of finding a floor shifter

Re: 3 on the tree trouble shifting
Looking at your last picture it looks like your lower column bearing is shot or gone ? look at how the shaft is miss aligned to the bottom of the column itself ? This could be the source of your problem with binding up the shifter ? I had to enlarge your picture to see it but it looks off center to me ? check to see if there is any play in the shaft ? does the steering wheel move up and down when pressure applied ?

Quote:
The entire shaft has play both up and down and side to side if you were to grab the shaft you can move it side to side with ease |

Re: 3 on the tree trouble shifting
That's your problem , a Cheap somewhat easy fix compared to changing over to a floor shift . Replace both upper and lower column bearings , Pictures always tell the story ,

Re: 3 on the tree trouble shifting
Once fixed you can use that money you were going to spend at a shop to take your wife out to dinner and while your explaining to her how much you saved it would probably be the right time to talk to her about that next expensive part you wanted !

Hahaha! Well I had some time today so I dropped it off at a shop recommended by a handful of people (and the old guys at the local ace hardware who have been around the block). So fingers crossed they dont kill me too bad. I wanted to have them once over everything anyways.

Re: 3 on the tree trouble shifting
Quitter !
Here are the parts they'll need , So much for taking your girl out to dinner , She's probably at work telling her friends "your" new toy already had to be dropped off at the repair shop . https://www.classicparts.com/1969-72...nfo/76%2D823/# https://www.classicparts.com/1964-72...info/76%2D815/ I'm really interested in what a shop charges to repair one of these old trucks today ? |

Haha, quitters never win and winners never quit. And your absolutely right about that! More than likely word for word, but rather than toy she probably used POS
