And.....no more yearly "safety inspections" at least in MO. That in and of itself would be worth doing the mileage log, but I always forget. Now...if an insurance company would come up with a single fee, and one blanket liability policy which would cover all the vehicles I am on board......after all, you can only drive one at a time.

Re: YOM tags

I am currently running my state's pioneer plate, which save the yearly renewal. However, I did find this plate underneath the seat. The truck was sold originally in North Carolina. I have no idea if the plate is legit or not. If anyone has an opinion, I'd be interested.

The best source is the State of North Carolina. Find their motor vehicle website and see if they have a customer service ''chat'' feature. Or call their number. Ask them to run the license number. If you're not an NC resident, you likely can't run their plate. But you could donate, sell or trade that plate to Board Member from NC.

Correct, no way I could run the plate. I was mostly curious if it was actually a state issued plate, meaning likely it was the first plate for the truck.

I can run plates, but it would have to be an "offline" search. Good call on NC DMV as I am sure it would have to be a hand search.

Re: YOM tags

In Ohio you have to register the truck with historical plates first, then model year plates are registered to the historical plates. Cost is $30 for historical plates and $6 for model year plates. Both are a one time only fee and are registered for as long as you own the vehicle. Model year plates can be run on the truck but the historical plates must remain in the glove box.

Re: YOM tags

Here is an idea for you guys that don't have the option to run vintage tags. I can't because it is registered as a regular vehicle. I already had a NOS Ky truck tag from 71, and have been actively searching for a plate surround from Parsons Chevrolet. Heck , they may have never existed. Until then, I will use this. State regulation tags are on the bumper.

Here you go Tim. The 1940 Virginia plates on "OUR" 1940 pick up. I don't know if they alternated black and white back then. I found another one for you. My father's 1918 model T. This is the only picture I have showing the plate.

Please spot some more photos of your truck in the pre '47 area. We'd love to see it.

Re: YOM tags

I just got my blue plates. I've just got to put on the 1970 sticker which was included (DMV requirement) and clean them up a little.

And then go to the DMV.

Here are the original California plates from my '69. Licensed in Orange County in late 1969. I guess I'm a hoarder. I wish I could use them in Wisconsin.

Probably, but for some reason, I think they should stay with the truck.

I also have a motorcycle plate from the same time period.

Re: YOM tags

In Georgia, they have a YOM program for vehicles up to 1970, after that they started using stickers, thus ending the year specific plates. I found my 1968 plates I wanted and simply went to the DMV and registered my truck to it. You have to keep the modern plates in the vehicle when driving. The 1968 plate will show the data of the modern plate, sort of tying the two plates together. So the 1968 plate will be what is displayed on the bumper.

Here in TN, it just has to be the tag style that was issued in that era....it's odd that some tags did have year stickers and some did not in the same era. Some had the year stamped in as well.
I wasn't sure that they would register it because it was a custom made tag with the number/letter combination that I wanted on it.
Since it's a permanent registration and won't have to be renewed, there is no year sticker required. Also the county I live in is pretty lenient....probably not so for other counties and states?

Here is a partial view of the registration...it shows the tag number then a code/year of issue. This tag style started in 1966
Also you can see where it states the registration is "permanent"

Re: YOM tags

Permanent is nice.
Arizona will only let me do 2 years at a time on my '71 Jimmy.
My '68 C/10 Stepside still has to go thru emissions, and therefore can only be registered every year. But the '68 still has a conventional commercial plate.
I do have a White, w/ Black letters, '66 - '68 Ariz plate, but I'm saving it for my '67 K/10 Suburban.

Acquire your tag yourself and there is a phone number you can call to verify the number sequence is available before you buy the tag from someone if that was your plan. If it is available, they will hold that sequence for you for 30 days to get all the paperwork together. There is a form and you have to submit a color copy of the tag and they have to verify everything is correct and the correct color as many of the older tags changed color from year to year. Once it is approved, DMV sends a letter and the new registration. You don't have to put the new decal on the tag, it just has to be kept with the registration in the vehicle at all times. I was glad I was able to do this for my truck. People always ask, when will you get a real tag for the truck?
bwl101, that is a nice looking truck...more pics please!

That is a cool tag. I like that. In GA it has to be an actual tag from that year. Very cool Tennessee will do a custom tag like that.
