Back in my younger dayze I shopped mostly in junkyards as I'd find the best un molested things there and cheaper too .

Re: "Scrap Happy"
Yabut, you live here in southern California, where guys USED to be able to go into a boneyard and get a completely rust-free '40s - '70s body. I sold my '68 Skylark a few years back, but I could have picked up a complete running '70 Electra 225 with a 455 and a 400 THM and AC for $1400 at the Pick-Your-Part in Sunland (now called LKQ) that I could have stuffed into it for cheap...and then scrapped the rest and been money ahead. Since Joe took the classic pre-'73 cars to Memory Lane, and then that folded, those deals are only found in a back lot of some house where you can see it from the street, if you're lucky.

'Scrap Happy'
Memory Lane was interesting, they moved it to a tiny place in Wilmington and it folded up shortly thereafter .
Our '67 ~ '72 trucks were always notorious rusters, I looked at some cabs but LKQ said $700.00 ! and here in So. Cal. good cabs were maybe $500 at that time so I passed .

Re: Lets see pics of your truck hauling!!
Wasn't there a place called Chevy Only or something like that on Tuxford / Roscoe? I bought a pair of Vette rally wheels for the rear of my Camaro there. Probably about 1976 or so.

Re: Lets see pics of your truck hauling!!
can't find the pictures I took, but there was a huge fire over there on lomita by the bone yards about 6-8 years ago.. I was southbound on wilmington ave heading to one of our stations where it tees into lomita.. don't know if memory lane was already gone or possibly that did it in..
I reaally miss alco truck on alameda just past the henry ford rd split.. they've been gone for a long time, recycling center for transients now, gotta dodge all the bicycles and shopping carts in that area one by one, all going away for stacks and stacks of econo boxes and minivans

Junkyards Gone
AHA ! I never knew about the fire .
The really old P-A-P on the West end of Lomita, near Memory Lane's last location survived the fire but was closed down after LKQ did their thing buying up every self service junkyard they could and closing down the competition illegally . That white Blazer picture looks good enough for a sales brochure . -Nate Quote:

Re: Lets see pics of your truck hauling!!
My 72 c20 longhorn with a 72 Sportsman camper. The springs handle the load but that unboxed old style frame has a whole lot of sway in it.

Re: Lets see pics of your truck hauling!!
That's a lot of weight mounted high, which has increases the moment of inertia. If it doesn't have a rear stabilizer bar, it should. Even after just putting Firestone Transforce tires on my truck, I noticed over steer with the new camper shell, even though I run 10 PSI higher pressure in the rear tires. Didn't have that problem with the old Michelins, but they don't make that size any more. It's a problem, even with the equalizer hitch. Since I tow a 26 foot travel trailer, I'll be balancing out the suspension with a rear stabilizer bar.

Re: Lets see pics of your truck hauling!!
No need for boxed frames. These frames were quite strong. My camper was a bit smaller than yours but my '71 Custom Camper rode flat and stable with the camper mounted and loaded up. Maybe the springs are tired (leaf, right?) or shocks are bad. Also, it appears to be slid back from the cab close to a foot. That will cause sway due to poor weight distribution. Is the bumper in the way of sliding it up? I didn't have a rear stabilizer, but I did slap 33/12.50s on 9.75 rims on when I bought it. Wider tires would do wonders for your truck.

Re: Lets see pics of your truck hauling!!
Pulling my “trash trailer “. I remodel kitchens and bathrooms and throw anything that won’t burn in it. Finally took some time to show it a little attention. New tires, painted the wheels and sideboards and cleaned it up. Hopefully good to go for a while.

I think that I have solved the mystery of not having "Longhorn" emblems on the fenders. The bed is tweaked a little, so it was probably hit sometime before '73 when my FiL bought it. He's never mentioned it getting hit, that's why I say before. Can't ask him, since he died 9 years ago. Whoever did the body work probably just left the trim off. The SPID says 133" wheel base, so it's a true Longhorn. I'll check someday if it has bondo or braze there.

Re: Lets see pics of your truck hauling!!
I kept looking and still wasn't sure if it was a Longhorn. Didn't think it was. But, yeah, some companies for that time period made a model specific for Longhorns.
