Great idea! After seeing your pictures, Cindy suggested maybe we could do this too so we are going to try to copy your idea. Hope you don't mind Jim.

Re: My 50 roadster pickup build
Hey guys, instead of pics and cruise etc., this update is on another change I've wanted to do for a long time, but could never find a way to do it. You know the old say "these things are never done" (meaning our rides). When I was building my truck I set it up with a 78 Chevy Caprice column with the stock steering wheel. Well, when I installed the La Carre wheel and adapter it moved the wheel toward the driver. Everything was painted and done, so I just let it go, driving was fine, but I always wanted a little move arm room.
12 yrs later I found an ad from Southern Rods about a new shorty adapter. Called them up, and it sounds like they have what I need, so I order it. Long story short it works great. (Oh, my son Mark did the work, I did the hard part and took pics) Here's the ink to the part http://www.southernrods.com/steering...y-adapter.html Pic 1 typical 2-5/16" adapter, notice the distance from wheel to turn signal arm. Pic 2 Flat horn button on the wheel Pic 3 The new shorty adapter with new bolts, etc. Pic 4 Looking at old adapter before removing (notice how far down the shaft is inside the adapter). Pic 5 New shorty adapter setting on shaft, not tightened down yet. (Notice how hight the shaft is above the adapter)

Re: My 50 roadster pickup build
Pic 1 You still need to use the old wheel ring with the beveled holes to hold wheel to adapter, just like the old one. (use the new bolts that come with the new adapter they are smaller).
Pic 2 Notice distance from wheel to turn signal arm. Pic 3 If anything negative about the install is the higher horn button location, but is is necessary to cover the shaft from steering column. Pic 4 New adapter on column, old one below. I thought that if anyone needs 2" less on their column length with the wheel installed, this is a good way to go. Isn't cheap, but takes care of the problem...Jim

Re: My 50 roadster pickup build
Jim, does having the turn signal stalk that close to the wheel hurt anything? Looks good but I've always liked your truck and don't see the Flaws you see.

Re: My 50 roadster pickup build
Hey Ray, Thanks for checking it out. No the turn signal arm has enough room, but I really noticed how close it was when I took it for a drive and used it a couple time. Wasn't really a flaw just something that bothered me (ha ha) OCD, OCDC, ADHD whatever that stuff called ...Jim

Re: My 50 roadster pickup build
Nice modification Jim.
Ididit came out with a shorty adapter a few years ago and they do mention to watch the clearance to turn signal stalk and shift lever. Guess that is the only downside for a little more arm room it is worth it. http://www.ididitinc.com/accessories...daptors_Acc-16 Thanks for sharing. |

Re: My 50 roadster pickup build
I had the same problem with the 55 so I just shortened it a bit and re threaded it.

Re: My 50 roadster pickup build
Does the knob have a 1/4-20 on that end?

Re: My 50 roadster pickup build
thats a great mod, I never knew someone made a shorter one. I had to put a LONGER one on my 47, the billet one wouldnt let me switch highbeams on and off with the lecarra wheel and the 99 column. I had to buy a 70s stock black wrinkle coat lecarra hub that was slightly longer.
if you dont want to make it shorter and your knuckles are banging it in turns (that was also a problem on mine) you could always put it in a vice and put a technical bend in it.

Re: My 50 roadster pickup build
Well guys it's that time of year again, my yearly trip to Springfield for the Mid
America Nats. As per my usual, up and back on Friday, up Saturday stay the night and back on Sunday, with a little over 500 miles total. Didn't take any pics on Friday, Mark and I were buying things we need for the shop and customers rides. Did hit some hard rain returning home on Friday, but rest of week-end was great. Saturday at the Nats was the best time I've had in years, will talk about it later in the update.
