Re: '66 Sunbeam Minx Project - F20C/6sp/4-link/Discs...

I don't make it a habit to announce on the interwebs when I'm out of town, but I can tell you now I'm back from a month in Montana. There is more of that to come but scheduling is far from solid yet.

A 60' Alpine would be fun. Of coarse it would have to get crossbred if I did it. Perhaps something of the cosworth flavor. If I were to do another Rootesmobile it would probably either an Imp (Suby STI power?)

or an early Husky:

After the 5 that I have in the works now achieve some level of "completion" I'd like to do an STI powered modernized 356 Speedster, 1955 2-dr Tahoe (shortened/sectioned, fixed top), 4dr FJ40 (they were built under the name Toyota Bandeirante in Brazil until 2001), 70's Alfa GTV, Shelby Cobra, VW square or notch for kids, Unimog, 911 variant, D90 Rover for the wife...

Ask me tomorrow and the list will change, but those are some that seem to have sticking power for me. Really it comes down to what comes along when the time/price is right

Starting to wonder what had happened..... A month in Montana sounds nice though.

To add my own cross-breed project desire to your list, I've been long wanting to put one of the later LS engines (with as much C-6 chassis and suspension as possible) into an '89 Pontiac Fiero. Of course one of those crazy, one-off custom body kits would be a must too.

Re: '66 Sunbeam Minx Project - F20C/6sp/4-link/Discs...

Hey hey let's get back to this amazing project! Honda's F20 and F22 are far better engines than the EJ anyway. All forged internals with some pretty advanced metallurgy allow it to sing at high RPM's indefinitely PLUS if you're looking for boost, FI F series engines can put out up to 700WHP with the only reliability risk becoming the head gasket.

Can't wait for more driftbeam/S2Minx pics and updates!!!

Thanks for your patience and continued interest guys. My schedule is hosed until January. I might get a chance to tweak on it over the next week a tad, but that's it until at least xmas

An STI engine would be a lot of fun! I hear ya, I keep changing my mind as to what I'm going to do next after the truck. I think the next project is a 73 VW westy with a 911 turbo engine. The wife has been insistent on this one

Also, what welding rig are you using?

Re: '66 Sunbeam Minx Project - F20C/6sp/4-link/Discs...

I got a couple hours in the shop today

Last I recall there was a big squareish hole in the trunk floor for the modded fuel components to fit.

Here's the begining of the answer to that problem:

bent up a filler panel

...and made a transition out of a couple sections previously removed (can't make these on a brake)

That's it for now. Hopefully I get some more shop time before 2011...

Re: '66 Sunbeam Minx Project - F20C/6sp/4-link/Discs...

Happy New Year All

Well, my shop camera gave up the ghost and the "good camera" is unavailable so these are the best I can do for now (phone).

More progress on the trunk floor:

I'll have to cut a larger hole as marked if I want to be able to remove the fuel pump without dropping the tank:

Had some help in the shop, so I took that opportunity to perform a shockmountectomy...
This old shot shows the factory upper shock mounts:

They had to go to make room for the S2000 rear coilovers test fitting here:

Lower mount bushings are ordered and on the way...

Just after plasma-assisted removal:

Cleaned up and ready for scabs:

Re: '66 Sunbeam Minx Project - F20C/6sp/4-link/Discs...

It really is very low on the rustification factor. Some might say such a fine example should be kept as-is or properly restored. I say what a great basis for a project. Beats doing a slew of rust repair before really starting the project. Then I'd really never get it done. The mods it's getting are enough work alone...

Built a press-brake for my shop-press tonight. Now I can make the scab plates from fewer pieces by bending where I would have otherwise welded. Pics tomorrow.

Re: '66 Sunbeam Minx Project - F20C/6sp/4-link/Discs...

I feel your pain on the rust. If i had the skills i would totally cut up that sunbeam.
The entire project is cool and original it's awesome. Even if you had started on a rust bucket you would have heard "well if your going to do that much work might as well do a regular resto"

Hey do you still have the from seats from that s2000?

and look what i found this morning i found it funny.

as long as it works . looks fine to me
to bad the press is kinda narrow or you might be able to make one big enough to bend doorskins

I can bend doorskins on my sheetmetal brake. The press brake is for plate; making brackets, scab plates, etc.

looking good FF. quick question on the trunk hinges, were you planning to do something different? or keep the strut rods on the two sides as well as the hinge on top. i would think you have something planned

as for the scab break awesome i just might have to steal that idea. i picked up a press last month. 20 ton for $300.
