Seeing your pictures makes me think your TCC (700r) cable isn't set up to the proper throw causing some unnecessary slip. That might be the cause of excess clutch debris in he pan but its not unusual to have some because the initial break in (wear in) will create some excess.
Your pump could be a High volume with it designed to supply more fuel but not pressure unlike a high pressure pump which will deliver 12psi. If you have a high pressure pump with out a regulator it will not let the needle/seat seal and flood the engine which is your symptoms.

Update. I met a member today (Joe Pass) who came by to help dial in the engine and get rid of some of the gremlins haunting the engine. We added a fuel pressure regulator which required changing the fuel line to the carburetor. Adjusted the timing (which was way over 12 degrees), Adjusted air/fuel mixture on the carburetor and put the vacuum line on the correct side of the carburetor. We discovered that a much needed bracket for the 700r4 transmission cable was missing from the carburetor, which was causing slippage in the transmission. I ordered the part from Summit and will put it on when it arrives.

After all that the engine is running smooth and sounds so much better. We went for a short drive to the gas station to fill up the empty gas tank. We drove through some puddles, while it was raining. A first for Joe in a hot rod and a first for Lemondrop.

If all is good after putting on the transmission bracket, I’ll take a trip up to Joe’s shop for some fine tuning (more so to check out Joe’s shop). He is a wealth of knowledge and I’m happy with what he did. He understands how supped up engines can be temperamental.

MAJOR PROPS TO JOE!!!!!

I had Lemondrop towed up to Joe’s Place. What an awesome shop. We did some more researched and learned that the trans TV cable was not properly installed, parts were missing which has a great effect on how the transmission operated. I ordered a new TV cable, linkage and bracket which is highly recommended by Bowtie Overdrives. After installing the proper parts and performing the recommended tests to document the transmission pressures, we took Lemondrop for drive. Wow what a difference.

We also replaced the fuel pump with a 6 psi rating, which eliminated the need for the fuel regulator. We rebuilt the carb and Joe made a few more adjustments to dial in the tuning.

During the week it was at Joe’s place he looked over the truck and found some things that I had installed incorrectly, rag joint, shocks and suspension components and some things that broke and needed repairs, speedo gear and leaking seal. He shimmed the transmission to get a better angle on the drive shaft. He replaced the leaking steering gear box with a remanufactured one and made an adaptor for the power steering hoses. He installed the proper parking brake cable bracket on the hand brake under the dash. He made a stainless steal line for the vacuum line and PVC line. Joe also did something that I didn’t expect, but was happy that he did, He checked the AC system for leaks and then charged the AC with a 1.5 lbs of 134. On a hot day the AC temp at the vent was 53 degrees.

A friend of Joe’s dialed in the alignment and wheel bearing preload.

Friday I went back to Joe’s and we went for a drive. Words cannot describe the why I was feeling. Happy, excited and yet nervous that the engine was gonna start running rough and we’d be stuck on the side of the road. We took Old Redwood Hwy north and drove to Healdsburg. We drove through town and received a “thumbs up” and “nice truck” from a few people we passed. From there we jumped on Hwy 101 back to Joe’s. Everything worked great. RPMs at approximately 70 mph were at 1800.

Today I drove Lemondrop home, which was the longest trip to date that truck has taken. I am confident that I can know take it on some road trips and if I finish the truck up by next summer (still have interior and bed wood to doo) I’ll take it to some car shows.

Joe is a great guy with a lot of knowledge, which he is more then happy to share. I have to thank him for getting Lemondrop to this point as well as thank him for reigniting my interest in the truck. I can once again see the light at the end of the tunnel and its not too far away.

I managed through the heat today and did a little work on my door panels. I cut the shape of the arm rest out of wood to a two dimensional shape of them. Then I used floral foam, which I cut and shaved until I was happy with how it looked. Next I carved in pockets for the door pull and the door latch. I still have to do a lot of fine tuning to do, including mocking up the power window switches, making holes for the bolts that attach the arm rest to the door panel and then once I’m happy with it I’ll fiberglass it and then repeat the process for the other door. All it all I'm happy with how it turned out.

Everyday I open the garage I see how nice the truck looks with its cover on. I'm happy that the cover is there to care for the paint. Then I see the pile of parts I have sitting on the counter that are just waiting to be put on the truck and remembers Joe's open invitation to come up "when ever" to put the parts on the truck. But then I turn around and see the unfinished front yard and remember that winter is coming. So in order to avoid having a fishing pond in the front yard, all of my attention lately has been to finish the yard before the rain comes. Yes I'm giving positive thoughts that we will get rain this year.

So I'm sorry to disappoint everyone. It has been hard not being able to get somethings done, even more so because I can see the finish line for the build.

Okay, for those who have been patiently waiting and for those who got tired of waiting, I have an update. Not a big one but it is an update.

I have gotten caught up on the things around the house that needed my attention. So yesterday I had some time to work on the other inner door handle. I previously carved one inner door handle from foam and yesterday I made the other one.

After I got it all carved up and closely matching the other one. I figured out a way to fasten the leading edge of it to the door panel. Then I located a place on the door handles to put the electric window switches.

All of these appeared to work and fit into the project, but we'll see how it actually turns out. Once I get it all fine tuned, I'll cover it with fiberglass, sand and fit on the door panel. Thanks for checking it. Stay Tuned, more to come SOON……….Hopefully.
