I wish, It seems like everything always costs more than I anticipate.
At the moment I'm saving up to pay someone to fix the frame and get the bed painted, I hope to have those things done by the middle of October.

Oh I hear ya on the cost issue. I hear ya.
Nice seeing all those boxes of parts arrive though.
Pretty soon you'll have plenty to keep you busy.

Re: 1968 Chevrolet SWB Stepside Restomod

Hey all;
Ok so originally I had planned to repair the frame and cab that I have but after giving it a lot of thought I have decided to replace both.
What I'm getting out of the deal is a matching 1972 short bed frame, cab and glove box door with SPID sticker and clear title.
I have seen the frame and it is powder coated.
I haven't seen the cab yet but I have been told it has been properly repaired and I am going to inspect it sometime in the next couple of weeks and if it's what he says it is then I will go get it all the next weekend.
So slight course correction here but if it all works out ultimately I am getting a nicer truck out of the deal, so wish me luck.

I am doing a complete 1967 body, I haven't decided if I am going to weld up the cargo light hole or not yet though.

Re: 1968 Chevrolet SWB Stepside Restomod

Hey all;
Oh man I keep eyeing those CPP 1971-72, 2.5" drop spindles and I can't find a single reason not to pull the trigger on them so after I get my new frame the first order of business is going to be to install the CPP C-Notch then buy the drop spindles and 2" lowering blocks for the rear axle.
The total drop will be 4.5"/6" which in my opinion is the perfect static drop for this truck.
That combined with moving the engine closer to the firewall and all the other suspension and brake upgrades I have done it should handle and stop more like a sports car instead of a truck which was one of my goals from the very beginning.

It won't set me back at all it's about 2 hours worth of work and $280.
I will just have a pair of stock 1971-72 spindles to sell that's it.

Glad to see you are still at it. I've been enjoying mine. I did the CPP tubular LCA and UCA. Night and day difference!

Re: 1968 Chevrolet SWB Stepside Restomod

Hey all;

Here is the cab from the 1972 short fleet I purchased, it has some surface rust on it from sitting for 5 years after the metal repair but otherwise it's in good condition.

I seen that cab when I was at Bobs. It looked pretty nice from what I could tell. Congratulations on the new cab! That is going to really cut your build time down since you don't have any rust repair to do.

Thanks guys.
Sadly it's that time of year again in Kansas where I'm rapidly running out of nice weather.

Looks like a nice cab. What are you doing to clean up the surface rust?

Since I have a lot of surface area to cover I am using a Polycarbide disk on a side angle grinder to get the bulk of the surface rust, I still need to go back and hit all the cracks and crevices with a wire wheel to finish it off.

Nice looking cab Brian, wish I could have came across one that nice. I definitely wouldn't have wasted all the time on mine.

Thanks, yeah I lucked out on it, but like any other cab it has it's issues mostly because of the repair work, a lot of it was seam welded instead of butt welded so the cab corners will have to be cut out and replaced even though they are new, but the rest of it I can live with because it's all in the floor and will be covered up by carpet anyway.

Re: 1968 Chevrolet SWB Stepside Restomod

One interesting thing to note, even though this truck is a 1972 it has no provision for a cargo lamp, which is fine by me because if it would have had one I was going to delete it anyway so less work for me.
