Re: 67 GMC super custom build

My gas tank neck wasn't centered for some reason and I don't think it sealed properly so I massaged it to be centered and I removed it. I'm going to have it cleaned and lined by the rad shop that rebuilt my rad. I know that it will fit properly unlike some repos I've heard of. There is still the glue on the tank that held the carpet down behind the buddies.

Re: 67 GMC super custom build

Tank came back today nice and clean inside and no leaks. Now I have to Get this glue off the outside and clean it up. Maby paint it? Not sure. I'll have to check around to see what ppl on the board are doing. Had a little repair done on the neck too. After I centered the neck in the cab hole it needed a little touch up at the base.

Re: 67 GMC super custom build

Got the glue off the tank. The original finish must have been just shiny bare metal as you can see its cleaner where the glue was removed. Possibly galvanized? Anyway I'm not sure if I'm going to paint the tank or just put it back in as seen here all cleaned up.

Re: 67 GMC super custom build

So the more I think about it I don't want the spillage out of the cap when I make a left turn like can happen with the vented caps so I may purchase one of these fill restrictors for the fill neck. It won't block it off completely but will stop some of the slosh from getting to the fuel cap.

Re: 67 GMC super custom build

Well I had to change my oil pan gasket to the thinner front seal. The site clearly states that a pan with 2 3/8" smile requires a thicker gasket but that's bs. Mine is clearly that deep. The first pic is with the thicker one. The second with the thin one. At least the gasket is reusable if I ever need one for its application.

Re: 67 GMC super custom build

Got the pan back on with the new gasket. Worked nicely. Also got the engine on the run stand. I'm not sure if I'm going to run it on the stand or just get it on the frame and break it in before I hook up the torque converter so the transmission doesn't connect. The stand seems a tad bit flimsy. I just hope it won't leak. The new oil pump runs 100% quieter than the old one when priming the engine! If I do run it I'll need to make a stand for the radiator

Re: 67 GMC super custom build

Got the engine timed and the distributor and wires on. Hopefully Sunday I can get the rad stand built and get the gauges hooked up. Then possibly a Monday or Tuesday breakin!

Been off for a bit...nice to come back to lots of cool updates. And this is hands down the coolest build. Here's to a smooth break-in! Looks great.

Re: 67 GMC super custom build

The break in will once again be delayed as my amp for my transistor ignition is not working properly. Have to order a new circuit board.

Re: 67 GMC super custom build

I ordered a newer style ignition board that wasn't available when I had this set up restored. Should be better than a 50 year old original. New vs old...

Re: 67 GMC super custom build

So I got my radiator mount started. Can't use a shroud so with my fan and a pusher fan on the other side of the rad I hope this is enough cooling

Re: 67 GMC super custom build

Since it’s not moving the truck or doing a dump pull I wouldn’t think you’d have any issues overheating with your setup.

I have to wait for my new circuit board. I wish I could right now. Hope it gets here soon but the tracking says shipping will be delayed due to the pandemic 😭. Original clamps on everything!

Re: 67 GMC super custom build

Being that I fabricated the timing tab to look original I needed to verify it was correct so I used a piston stop and checked it for tdc. Here's the results. I did pretty good.

Re: 67 GMC super custom build

That's the strangest spark plug I've ever seen...

All kidding aside, you've come up with a pretty neat way to accurately find TDC.

Re: 67 GMC super custom build

My engine builder said if I ran it on the stand that my warranty was over. He said it needs to be run in on a drive in a vehicle so I took it off and here it is in its final resting place!

Re: 67 GMC super custom build

I think the bottom of your transmission pan is cleaner than the dish I had dinner on...

You've built in so many cool features to really make this a fantastic daily driver, dare I say even to be used as a truck! Is it gonna be hard on you when you drive down a muddy road, knowing how much work it will be to maintain the level of cleanliness you have now?

Re: 67 GMC super custom build

It won't be driven on any muddy roads in it future but it will be driven. I don't believe in buying a vehicle to have it sit in the shop. I hope that I could drive it for half as many hours as I've worked on it once completed.

Re: 67 GMC super custom build

Found an awesome bracket from a Ford that fits the gear vendor speed sensor perfectly. Now I need to get a custom metal speedometer cable made for it. Added a few things to the engine to make sure all the belts line up as well.
