Re: 1958 Apache 38 Dually Dump Project

Well you guys definitely have the "Holy" thing going on here with this build....

It is incredible the time and patience you both have with doing all it takes to make this a 110% over the top build! VERY nice work.

With all the welding of the fenders and inner panels to the cab itself - the whole front and cab will install as one piece now I assume? Your still making the whole thing removable though right? Gonna be a heavy piece of material!

Looks great though!

Re: 1958 Apache 38 Dually Dump Project

Thanks PTC!! Lots of work, for sure...but it's spread over a really long time, so not that bad.

The cab and front clip are one piece...forever! It's actually pretty easy pulling it on and off (with the lift) this way, maybe easier than when in separate parts.

Re: 1958 Apache 38 Dually Dump Project

Just switched off the lights in your shop..... Sounds like I am a stalker. Truck looks good.

Phil, having been able to sit and inspect you and Austin's amazing work up close, I have to tell the guys following this build: THIS IS WAAAAY BETTER THAN THE PHOTOS SUGGEST.

Thank you for the drive in the Bel Air tonight and then coming home in the Suburban unleashing the beast had me grinning like a madman.

Thank you for your friendship and hospitality.

HA! I thought you had passed out an hour ago! I feel bad sitting here knowing that you were up!! What a terrible host!

What the rest of you don't know is that Rian, Martin, Austin, and I were up till 5 a.m. swapping lies...and then Rian and Martin were up and out just a few hours later...they're working on literally just a couple hours of sleep.

What a whirlwind trip y'all are on! Thanks for the kind words and know that Y'all will always have a place to stay with us.

Re: 1958 Apache 38 Dually Dump Project

Well, second day back at work......

And I Hate being back. (One should never say or think that)

But the small window I had to see into your lives, share some of your toys and enjoy your hospitality was truly an event of a lifetime.

I can only say what my heart thinks, even if it is totally unrealistic.... But I would love to live and be successful out therein the USA.

Thanks again for your hospitality and friendship Phil and Austin.

Re: 1958 Apache 38 Dually Dump Project

Thanks Martin, so cool getting to spend some time with y'all!

We've had the cab up on the lift for a bit now, working on the underside.

We had to open up the back side of the hinge pockets early on to get to stripped/broken captured hinge nuts, plus most of that area was broken or rusted out.

We cut away the offending portions of the lower hinge pocket and rebuilt them with an access window to the hinge bolts/nuts...still have to make the cover plates.

Re: 1958 Apache 38 Dually Dump Project

More work on cleaning up the underside...removing old undercoating, patching rust spots/holes, also added a piece to transition from lower inner fenders to cab. All in all, not much...a couple hours here and there, probably be like that through the holidays.

Re: 1958 Apache 38 Dually Dump Project

I picked up a pair of "used", 4" lift 1 ton rear Deaver springs...new, never installed! These springs allowed me to remove the lift block we had installed with the tired, stock springs to set the correct stance as we finished out the bed. We expect a much improved ride also.

Also, cut, moved, and welded the hood cross brace to provide a bit of air cleaner clearance.

Thanks Kim!

We spent a few quality hours yesterday working...had 3 generations getting dirty...that's my dad and son cleaning all the old undercoating off the bottom side.

I dropped a few dimples into the hood brace piece while they were chipping away.

Scott (scotts62) spent most the evening hanging out, working on getting parts hammered into shape, and making a general mess in the shop!

Re: 1958 Apache 38 Dually Dump Project

Dang it. I just read this thread from ground zero. Now I'm sad that there isn't more to read. Now not all the holes tickle my fancy but I'm glad you guys carried it through the way you did. The work you're doing with your son will be the best memories of his life. I wish my dad would've done the same for me but I'll sure as hell be doing it for my boys.

Your build is amazing and you guys seem like great people. I'm only a few hours away and if I'm ever in the area in my burb I may need to drop by

Side note, Have you guys thought about getting that bad boy on the hotrod power tour?

Re: 1958 Apache 38 Dually Dump Project

Slow going over the holidays, but some progress non-the-less.

We rolled the cab outside one evening for some quality time with the sand blaster to clean the underside, front end seams, and other difficult-to-sand areas.

We're seam-sealing as much of the open, and welded, seams/patches that we can before coating the underside in POR-15.
