Re: What did you do with your truck today, take 2

Wired up my reverse lights using a relay only to find out the ground is back feeding through the indicator bulb when the ignition is turned off causing the indicator light to light dim. Maybe time to kill the power source to the relay or use a diode.

Re: What did you do with your truck today, take 2

Well, after 23 years, my aluminum radiator is starting to leak.
I bought an Ebay radiator, and a shroud with a 16 inch fan on it so I spent a few hours making them fit each other and got them ready to install. I bought an air conditioning hose kit, and had some fun installing the binary switch on the dryer, and planning locations and hose routing.
I bought the condenser, but it hasn't arrived yet, so just biding my time right now.
Drove it to work, and cleaned the truck while waiting for an airplane to arrive.
All in all, just another truck week.
Last week I gave the new tailgate and roll pan to the painter, and so I am still waiting for those pieces to arrive so I can install them.
Since I drive the truck a lot, it's a little embarrassing to drive it around not assembled all the way.

I put a stereo / speakers in my 52 on Friday night and installed some under dash courtesy lighting tonight. its finally nice to have something to listen to and not have to use my cell phone blasting out the tunes.

Well, here in Missouri it still 3/14 so this is what it did. Today is my 70th birthday, it was a nice 70 degrees in the Ozarks today, so I took a 20 mile trip down the road. Was great to drive the truck again, after a few months of bad weather. Here's a couple pics...Jim

Minor progress got the fender corner patch done. Glad I noticed it before paint.

Re: What did you do with your truck today, take 2

Hood was not closed securely, each road bump was moving the Hood by 2 inches up and down at least.
So welding applied to the latch plus replacement of the rubbers solved the problem. Much more quiet too!

Re: What did you do with your truck today, take 2

Went from a 350 to a 283. Now just waiting on a high mount alternator bracket to be delivered and find where I put my power steering pump bracket. It was a 2 day project due to a few issues (needing a new torque converter and a few other items.) It's good to have a summit near by...but not so good making a 70 mile 1 way trip on a friday evening from N. Atlanta to S. Atlanta (3.5-4hr round trip due to traffic). Was all worth it firing up with just the headers. Fortunately i warned the wife and daughter...but my poor neighbors. My cal-custom valve covers are still out being polished and I will have my late 50's corvette air cleaner tomorrow. Going for a 60's style build vibe.

Re: What did you do with your truck today, take 2

hey 47fasttoys, did you get the relay figured out? it shouldn't back feed through the relay for a ground unless there is a poor or non existant ground at the bulb socket and there is more than one circuit being used on the ground for that bulb. eg, if it back feeds through the back up light when you turn on the tail lights then check the ground for those 2 lights. easily enough done with a test light at the actual tail light bulb socket. just attach the test light alligator clip to a known good ground, turn on the tail lights and then touch the test light probe to the ground socket of the bulb. if the test light comes on, even dimly, then the ground for that light is poor. you may notice as well that the back up light is also trying to come on dimly. what is happening is the power goes through the element of the bulb and out through the ground circuit. since there is no ground it feeds back through the elements on the other bulbs using the same ground wire or ground location until it finds a bulb that will supply a ground. if you find this to be the case all you need to do is supply a good ground to that circuit and your troubles will probably go away. sometimes it can be a poor or non existant body ground. a body ground attached to a painted surface is not a good ground. from the battery there should be a large negative battery cable to the engine block, one battery cable to the frame, one (or two) smaller gage wires to the body (large enough to run ALL the accy options) and some guys will also run a battery cable from the frame to the engine as well.
hope that helps if you don't have it figured out already.

Re: What did you do with your truck today, take 2

I am removing the axle and springs from the 57 swb and I find the leaf springs welded to the axle. I have to remove the spring brackets, they are really on there. I am thinking acc torch rather than grinding

Drained & removed gas tank from behind seat, removed hood, various items under the hood off the 283 c.i. engine, front bumper. Was going to remove front clip but ran out of time & energy.
