Re: The Ulitmate Craigslist find thread

It is nice on the outside. Nice on the inside too. Even the seat and door panels. The seat belts are like new. No cut up dash or any of the usual stuff. Radio delete plate in the dash still. It went too long with a leak in the cowl area. It has some cancer in the firewall, kick panels and the floor. That's all fixable. I was just excited about the fenders and everything. It has a ding in the passenger side of the hood. A dent in the back of the drivers step. The glass is awesome as well as the front bumper and grill trim. I feel like I did well on it and I've been looking for years for one like this.

GMC Crackerbox 8V-71 Detroit Diesel

I am posting this for a friend of mine, it is a GMC Cabover with 318 Detroit Diesel and Eaton Fuller transmission. Truck was still operational when the frame and rears were removed. For more information or to make offer, contact Miles Wolfe at 660-834-5133, be sure to leave a VM message and he will call you back. Located near Pilot Grove Missouri.

Re: The Ulitmate Craigslist find thread

Here is what I picked up off of craigslist down here in Tucson. 1966 C60 service bed truck. I finally got tires that hold air on the front and I'm trying to get the brake drums back on the rear. whoever tore it apart pulled the drums and axles and left them out. Can any body tell me how to get the drums back on? I've been able to get them on up to about an inch from going all the way on. The outer seal will not go on to the axle all the way. Will I have to remove the seal to get it on all the way?

Re: The Ulitmate Craigslist find thread

If you're desperate, you can remove the seals and, pack the bearings with grease. That will get you home.
Chances are that; the shoes need backing off.
There is a small possibility that there is rust between the lining and the steel shoe,,, called rust jacking.
There is a possibility that the wheel cylinders expanded when the drums / shoes/ / springs were removed. You need to completely collapse the wheel cylinders/ adjustment.
Dunno if the shoes were removed or not.
Sometimes the bearings will get a bit crossed on the axle tube and, refuse to go on..
If you're already an inch onto the shoes, the seal hasn't yet reached the hub where it seats.
It sounds like the bearings are fighting you.
Check the lining-to-drum clearance first.

Thanks for the info Danny. I went back up to further work on the truck. After looking at things, I believe it is the outside seal that will not allow the drum to go all the way on. One wheel has all of the brakes components removed except the backing plate and it is having the same trouble getting past the seal and the end of the axle housing is right up against that seal but won't go past it. Does the seal come out from the outside or do I have to get at it from inside?

Re: The Ulitmate Craigslist find thread

I can't find any vids on the larger chevy axles. Fortunately, a c-30 is the same operation as a c-50
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=x_ducSJtHNY
This vid shows the basics.
I normally just hit the bearing with a cut-down 2X4 to drive out the seal.
BUT, some Chevys came with barrel shaped rollers, rather than cylindrical shaped rollers,,, on the bearing.
They won't take any hitting.
SOME Chevys came with an exceeding stupid design where the out bearing race must be driven all the way inwards to remove it.
Be advised that larger trucks do not use a lip seal.
They use a seal that drives on to the axle journal very tightly.
The wear surfaces of the seal are internal, NOT on the axle housing.
They go on very tight.
Something like this

Re: The Ulitmate Craigslist find thread

Description says automatic trans. You can see a 5-speed shifter with a 2 spd Axle.
Vacuum / hydraulic brakes.
Looks to be a 409, rather than a 348. Pretty nice truck.

Re: The Ulitmate Craigslist find thread

Evening Gents,

I am looking for a 70's C60 four door truck.

Pics posted for reference. I have been looking for well over a year and have found nothing. IM out west in California and I don't think there are many of these trucks out here. If anyone see's something on Craigslist, FB or any other sales media, please send me a message or post here.

Thank you!

What a monster! Think it would pull a 6000 pound trailer up a 6% grade at a decent speed (55 MPH)?

I agree, nice truck for a great price.

If the Emblems are original, it's a '65.

Interesting 7500. The rare combination of under CDL but with Air Brakes.
