Re: Project Grande Slam: Coley's Hot Rod Shop
Just for that, I'm going to lower the front and Jack the back way up with Buckshot mudders on my new wheels.
I KNOW ! I change my mind a lot. I'm not afraid to cut a frame for a notch, but I'm just not sure I want to cut the frame of a 70 SG / CST. I can tell you my stepper will be notched. It's just an original base truck, 6cyl 3OTT.

Re: Project Grande Slam: Coley's Hot Rod Shop
I know exactly how you feel. I'm the same way. Here's something to think about - If SG / CST's were ever going to be worth a lot of money, that time would be now. They made a bajillion of them - 1 less isn't going to stop the world from spinning. And while it's not easily reversed, I don't think it lessens the value any. Years from now when Buckshot Mudders are all the rage, you'll still be able to run them.
And when that time fiannly comes, you'll be in a nursing home trying to steady your drool cup. Cutting that vintage frame will be the last thing on your mind.

Re: Project Grande Slam: Coley's Hot Rod Shop
CNotching a CST, or Mini Tubs in a 69 Camaro .. The value added to get the look of a hot rod / up to date suspension / brakes, etc would essentially offset it I know. I may take it to 6.5" or so and just see where it's at. If it's not low enough I have access to a rack so I could do a bolt in notch later on. But, no, I'm not afraid to .. It's just a $2,500 truck.. right?
Just a big decision.

Re: Project Grande Slam: Coley's Hot Rod Shop
Chad I ran a 6 7/8" rear drop for about 8-9 months and the ride sucked the whole time. I just put the notch in on Saturday and let me tell you I am still kicking myself for not doing it earlier. If you want it low you are going to have to notch it, whether it be sooner or later it will have to happen.

Re: Project Grande Slam: Coley's Hot Rod Shop
Can you notch it without cutting the frame rails? Will it bleed when I cut it?
(kidding .. ) It will probably happen sooner than later.

Re: Project Grande Slam: Coley's Hot Rod Shop
That PB notch is crazy strong too. Does anyone know where I could find a picture of the lower shock bar and how the brackets mount? How does that all fit? Does it mount on top of the trailing arm and one side (having two mounting points) One for the lower shock cross bar and the other for the track bar? Am I seeing this correctly?
It would be PB if I notch it. (since I have the other stuff already) I'd just get another set for the stepper when I could.

Re: Project Grande Slam: Coley's Hot Rod Shop
You might as well notch it and take away any doubts about the rear bottoming out. Then you can pick up that that load of pressure-treated lumber for your new deck that the wifey wants us to build.

Mine is a 6" drop in the rear and I have a notch to install but haven't yet. However I can tell you... It needs it! I can jump up and down in the bed and it bottoms out.

Pop, I can see a Home Depot trip after you block that tailgate, and we could always just let the ends of the wood rest agaist the front panel and wheel wells. Posted via Mobile Device Posted via Mobile Device

Re: Project Grande Slam: Coley's Hot Rod Shop
Hey Chad, I passed on the two steelies. I just feel I will regret not doing a five lug swap from the get go. I'm also contemplating whether or not to do a notch when I drop the truck. I only plan on a 4-6 drop but seems like quite a few people recommend a notch even with a 4-6.
Good luck on the wheel. Hope it arrives soon and safe. |

Re: Project Grande Slam: Coley's Hot Rod Shop
Sounds like my Dad is on board now .. I'm shocked I must say but I really feel like I'd be happier with the outcome if it was notched. I can get it lower with the 45's that way.
Next question .. Would 4.5/F and about 7.5/R look goofy? Remember my rear tires will be pretty tall so the truck would sit pretty much level after all is said and done. I'm not sure I want to go any lower than 4.5 up front. I'm thinking notch it, 6" Hotchkis spring and block it to the point I want it to be? 7 or 7.5 maybe? I like a slight rubber rake, ultimately I just don't want the back lower than I can get the front. 255/45/20 and 295/45/20 = 29.03" tall in the front and 30.45" tall in the back. Chris, when you get ready man I'm serious .. I'll help you swap it over to 5 lug. It's not that big of a deal. Get you some wheels you really want and a 4/6 drop (or more..) and we'll get it done.

Re: Project Grande Slam: Coley's Hot Rod Shop
Pop -- Here's some PB info and pics on the rear notch kit.
http://67-72chevytrucks.com/vboard/s...d.php?t=405754 Pretty much what you see here without the bags. We have the notch and upper shock bar in that box over by the back wall. We just need the brackets for the lower shock mount bar, the lower shock bar itself, and Nate's track bar. I really like this setup and getting it ready / without the bed on would be the prime time to do it. It would just be a static version of his Stage II kit with Bilstiens. http://www.porterbuiltfabrication.co...-Basic-Kit-799

Re: Project Grande Slam: Coley's Hot Rod Shop
Chad, notch it man as you will not regret it. It will ride alot better. As for your tire sizes those work well as thats what I had in those pictures that I sent you. Its much easier now with the box off. I put one in on my '66 with the box on and what a royal pain in the butt as you are so limited for room.
Hope you have other wheel in a day or two as that will be a big relief for you. Looking good!! |
