Re: 61K10 build

Kimble - I have read through your build start-finish. I admire your work and love the truck!

Several posts back and a couple of years ago, you mentioned finding bronze bushings to replace the hub needle bearing for a disc brake swap. Oilite 1-1/8id x 1-5/8od x 1". Can you verify the size of the bushing? According to Oilite that bushing is not standard size and needs to be custom made, but it looks like you found the bushing on ebay. Thank you!

Re: 61K10 build

I posted wrong? I think maybe oilite ff1618-01 flange 1-3/8 x1-5/8 x1- flange is 2"" od and 1/8" thick. I have another complete new set as the ones i installed on my axle were all used except rotors. I will remeasure and post up

Re: 61K10 build

the prior post is the right part #. you can turn down the stub axle shaft a few thou and use the needle bearings. I wanted to go back to 100% stock if need be.

New job is going well thus far, but we'll see what happens. The railroad is taking a turn for the worst these days. Union Pacific and CSX have merged together so now they're laying off a ton of people and putting locomotives in storage as per a new 2020 Unified plan. Bunch of BullSh** that their doing, but what's to expect with money hungry CEO's right?
Thought I had my career path chosen, but I may be doing something else soon. Hard to make large purchases wondering if your gonna get laid off or fired everyday. haha
Now thinking of fire department or getting a diesel tech associates and getting into semi trucks.

St6guy--good eye. It's a R/Shack 40 channel? can't remember. It's not working as my cable to my old wip mount doesn't fit. I'll get to it someday lol.

Re: 61K10 build

Yea I'm really into the radio thing and when I see radios in other peoples trucks they really catch my eye LOL.
I'm all so a big fan of all most every thing radio shack sold. It's to bad they are not really around anymore.

I got a realistic trc 427 in my 98 c1500 and a trc 473 that's going to replace the midland in my 65 c20 sometime soon.

Re: 61K10 build

Kimble,
What is new with you and your truck?

I have gone and purchased another 1966 GMC 4WD Suburban, with a lot of great help from a friend who found it. He also has totally facilitated the purchase.

Re: 61K10 build

Hi Les, just saw your post. Another haha. You have enough projects already. Glad you saved another one. Not much with my tk. Bough another trans (67 420) has the reverse sw in the shifter plate. Feels like it has a shorter throw, probably not but it shifts smooth. Now just need enough ambition to switch them out.

take care Les----------Kimble

Re: 61K10 build

Kimble,

66 GMC Suburban, just arrived this week, friend brought it to me, needs work. Been resting since 1993 or 95 outside, with front clip off. It has 25 plus years of dirt on it. Drive train/suspension looks to be original, body modified for big A.. tires. Thinking will start out keeping Dana 44 Closed knuckle 3.54 GMC gears. Any suggestions on maintenance to conduct before driving? Rolls very easy.
Just starting to check it out. First goal is to get it driving as, before any major mods.
Photos Apple sideways.

Re: 61K10 build

pretty nice Les--get it safe first as you know. Maybe change the axle oil and ck wheel bearings. Just depends if how much you're going to drive it. Hows the rest of your projects?

I found a nice vacuum gauge for mine so dash gauge panel needs to come back out.

Re: 61K10 build

Kimble,
Nice find on the vacuum gauge, will look nice.

Any thing lubrication wise, need to do on the closed knuckles.
Looks like their may have been a type of seal covering the inner part of the closed knuckle?

My other project are move slowly, some faster then others. Many of them are resting currently. They are all completed pretty much except for the body parts. The 66’ C20 CC is furthest along body wise.

Re: 61K10 build

Les on the closed knuckle make sure there is lube in them and run it in 4wheel to lube the knuckle bearings. There is gaskets on the knuckle itself, kinda like a wiper, most weep. That should get you started.
