Re: My 50 roadster pickup build
I was thinking about the same. Different rpm at test compared to use?

Re: My 50 roadster pickup build
Maybe I said this wrong, the alternator works, and shows 14-1/2 volts but only above 1500 rpm, it should show 14-1/2 volts when at idle. I've taken the alternator back to George, he has a new stator with a smaller ID for the rotor, so it should charge about 70 amps, 14-1/2 volts at 600 rpm. It should be ready tomorrow afternoon, I will install and report back the results...Jim

Re: My 50 roadster pickup build
You are correct Doug, I'm not sure of the rpm but is higher that 600 rpm. I'll see if I can get George to tell me more about the testing...Jim

Re: My 50 roadster pickup build
Well, we all know about "life gets in the way", and problems it can cause. Some may be thinking "it only takes 20 mins to install and alternator, what's the problem". Well my mother passed on Monday 9/12 and I had other things to take care of, my mom was 89 yrs old (3 months from 90) was in good health up until a few days before she passed. I praise God for his special gift of my mom to me. I miss her each day, but life goes on.
So now back to my alternator. I finally got the alternator and installed it today. I also talked to George about testing. The new stator was smaller on ID to the stator and he also said I had a bad diode. There was no charge for getting it right. He showed me it was putting out 14-1/2 volts at 800 RPM, and around 75 amps. 1st pic show 650 RPM, in drive, ac off - 14-1/2 volts 2nd pic shos 650 RPM, in drive, ac ON - 13-1/2 volts 3rd pic shows 850 RPM, in drive, ac ON - 14-1/2 volts ( I just gave it a little gas to raise the RPM's) 4th pic show a close up 700 RPM, in drive, ac ON - 13-1/2 volts If this were a new car, it would raise the RPM's when the ac was on, so I'm happy with how everything turned out. This is alot better than the first change to 105 amp. One of the main reasons for wanting higher volts, is within the next month I want to install FITech fuel injection. I wanted to make sure I always had a minium of 12 volts to the system. LEEVON has beat me to the punch and is installing one on his AD with the LS engine. I will still do a installation/pic update as I do mine. Catch you later...Jim

Re: My 50 roadster pickup build
Jim, we are really sorry to learn of your mothers passing.
The alternator looks like a good fix. You are fortunate to have someone who can still work on them. It's been years since I've rebuilt one. Fitech install will be interesting and looking forward to that. |

I checked Speedway, Summit, Jegs, etc. The fuel system hook up is on back order, Jegs says 10/3 will ship. I talked to tech at FITech and he said it would be longer than that, possibly 4 weeks. I will order the unit tomorror, they will ship that day, and go on the list for the fuel system. I'm checking the net for other kits, if I can find good stuff for about the same price I will buy that...Jim

EFI is something you will never regret, in my admittedly dim opinion. its like going from a bugle to a symphony.

Re: My 50 roadster pickup build
Hey troops, you can't believe how busy I've been the last couple weeks, and this week is starting to look busy. Anyhow I received by Fitech unit on Thursday 9/29 and the unit looks great. I also cancelled by order for the fuel pump system with Fitech, would be a least 3 weeks before shipping. I ordered the LS1/LT1 system from Speedway and a couple fittings, should be here Tuesday October 4. Mark and I will pick up the rest locally, which he has done for the LS swaps.
Talk to Leevon today, very helpful with how he set his up, and I'm following suit. It still may be awhile before I can work on mine. Mark got in another job today, 78 Firebird, needs complete floor pans installed. So three cars in the shop, so I will wait my turn. Pic of unit in the box. Will post as I start changing my stuff...Jim
