That's pretty much the reason I am looking for one from that era.

One other added benefit you might count is that it is likely to have less miles on it than another 73-87 donor rear end.

How easy is it to mount under a 73-87 truck? I know nlped had some issues when he put his under the truck and was lowering it.

Have welder, will swap!

It involves removing the spring perches and shock mounts from the original and welding them on to the replacement. Of course, care needs to be taken to install the perches in the right location and making sure the pinion angle is correct. Same with making sure the shock brackets are in the right location. E-brake stuff should swap over, and I am not sure on brake lines. The 88-98 might be metric, but the 73-87 wheel cylinders might also swap over. Or I suppose the entire backing plate couple be swapped.

If I remember correctly, Ed's issue was the diameter of the 88-98 housing is larger in diameter, so a typical 73-87 flip kit won't fit. But if you do this swap and do the flip at the same time, simply weld the perches on the bottom of the housing instead of the top.

Re: Glock's new project: "Fred"

I have gears for my rear end, but it's a complete 88-98 rear that I want. Freight on a complete rearend (200#, Class 85) with my freight discount is $112. So not really that much better than what I can get here. Appreciate the offer though!

Re: Glock's new project: "Fred"

Well, Dennis paid a visit to my salesman at Rancho! It seems as though the salesman got a lesson in what customer service should be all about, and how it stretches beyond state lines. I think he also now understands how word of mouth can reach potential customers who live only minutes away from your business, even if the mouth is over a thousand miles away in another state!

Oh how I would have LOVED to have been a fly on the wall this afternoon! Dennis, THANKS BROTHER!!

BTW, I just got an email from him saying the pedal, harness and module should ship today. And I quote: " I apologise for the poor service (as stated by the fellow that was here this morning) We will try to do better. "

Re: Glock's new project: "Fred"

Awesome! I read this entire thread today and have anxiously been awaiting the update!

I have a '87 that has been in the family a LONG time. It has a fairly weak TBI 305, and is ready for a repower. I was just about to build a mild TBI 350 roller motor to replace the 305. I was having a hard time getting excited about the TBI 350. I now KNOW what I'm going to do! Thanks for all of the great pictures and valuable information. I will start a bulid thread when I get the ball rolling.

I deleted the pics here and added them to the "pictures" post.

Re: Glock's new project: "Fred"

Oh, I forgot to add..... I picked up the pedal and harness from the dealership around 11:30 this morning. Hopefully by about 17:30 I'll know if I am going cruising on Sunday or not!

Re: Glock's new project: "Fred"

^^^Yeah that was my only issue with the rearend. The primary brake line on the newer rearend from the frame to the housing works with the factory fitting up top. I used the larger '96 rear brakes without issue. The added width really made the factory ralley's look more even front to rear, and the new 18x9.5" wheels look GREAT with the added track width...if they will just finish the damn new version so I can have my fronts. The other primary advantage to the '88-'98 rearend is that it is 30 spline rather than 28 spline and there are more posi applications available for the 30 spline ones.

Re: Glock's new project: "Fred"

Good news!!!! And a little bad....

First, the bad. The flipping heater core is leaking now!! So I have that half way out. And the thermostat is stuck. I have a LOT heat in the block and the heater hoses, but the lower radiator hose is cold less than 2" away from the water neck. The top hose is cold.

So tomorrow I get to go buy a heater core and a thermostat. I hate doing heater cores, cause I hate antifreeze!

Otherwise, I did get to drive it up and down the driveway a couple time. It's gravel, so I didn't get on it, but I can tell it's gonna be really responsive!

Re: Glock's new project: "Fred"

Proof!!!!

Thanks guys!!! I am soooo flippin happy that it finally works, but bummed I have to tear into him again. I have the heater core out, and will get the rest of the system drained and pull the thermostat tomorrow. I'll also install mcbassin's temp adapter then too.

I smell like antifreeze, so I'm gonna leave y'all with some pics of the new pedal, and I'm going to hit the shower!
