Re: 1949 Chevy 3600 into a daily driver

30's in January is about as good as it gets up here in NoDak.

If it would have hit 40 I would have shut the heat off and opened up all the garage doors!!

rustoleum semi gloss works nice for chassis and under hood .. I buy it by the quart .
thin it with acetone to spray it or you can brush it on the chassis .

Nice. I was going to do a TBird IRS, until I scored a deal on two C4 IRS. Yours looks a lot easier.

Found this picture on Instagram. I think Henry needs blue wheels.

What do you think?

I could go either way, blue or black. I like a lot of white with blue trucks, so like a cream with wide whites or something light would look cool too. lotta options with your blue.

I always thought a cream would look good......but I was afraid it would blend into the wide whites too much......

put a center cap on and a beauty rim, break it up a tad, or just go darker cream. either way I think it would look good.

I contacted Cragar about a beauty ring......they do not make one, but they say a thin one will fit. I need to round up a set.

Re: 1949 Chevy 3600 into a daily driver

Not much forward progress lately.

The IRS is mocked up and tacked. I made some templates for a bigger notch and those are at the fab shop getting cut.

I spent about 6 hours in the car over the last couple days and most of it was spent thinking of where and how best to mount my compressors and air tanks. Spent a little time tonight mocking it up.

I plan on drilling some holes for my leader hoses to go through the cross member to the tank.

Packaging components on a build sure takes time. Look, think and measure...too often I short myself on the think part.

Good looking components and location.

Thanks.

In my mind I figured I had enough room for a drop down battery box in the area as well. It did not work out once I start putting stuff in place.

Now I need to find a place for the Battery. UGGGHHH. :-)

Re: 1949 Chevy 3600 into a daily driver

so you're talking about battery out in the back? it won't fit between the compressors? How far down would you be able to mount below your frame?

I was actually hoping to build a box for the battery between the IRS and the air tank but there is not enough room.

It might fit between the compressors, but I had that space reserved for a couple holes for the leader hoses to go to the tank.

Re: 1949 Chevy 3600 into a daily driver

well reason I ask on your below frame location is.... if you mount below frame line, then perhaps you can play with mounting comps upright and getting a different angle on your lines. (I'm just a stickler for upright mounting on comps even though side mount still works). I'm seeing a couple ideas but without knowing sizes of things by the pics, its hard to say if it would work.
1.what if the comps where butt up to each other, heads facing one another and the hoses run through frame in the center, then to the space that is now left (where old compressor location was) you can mount a battery there.
2. any benefit to swapping air tank location with comps? if that area is bigger maybe the battery can go there too.
3. more work than necessary maybe, but... you can move the xmember back and have more room, seems to be about 6" from back of frame to comps, is that possible to utilize that space?
4. easy way out, can leader hoses go under that xmember if you had battery in middle?

Now you got me thinking.

I headed back out to the shop. Damn it is cold here. -10 right now. OK so if mount the compressors upright and side by side I would have room for a custom battery box as well a small mount for a box to hold compressor relays and main power fuse.

I did not have enough hands to hold both compressors and take a pic.

I have to do some research to see how much room I have on the top of the frame before I hit the bottom of the box.

Re: 1949 Chevy 3600 into a daily driver

yes that seems like it would be good right there. I was thinking that same set up, but bf the xmember. wasn't sure if you had the length or not, but that is cool there. If I can recall, with the 53 and earlier beds, they have a wood block on some of the mounting points and some xmembers, so isn't the bedwood atleast that high off the frame, like about 2"? you could also easily make a drop mount for your compressor to mount off your frame and drop the comp down about an inch or whatever you need.

Re: 1949 Chevy 3600 into a daily driver

I am going to look at it some more tonight. Not 100% sold on any of the ideas yet.

My main concern is I do not want to be able to see the stuff once the bed is on from the back.

I plan on running a rear bumper, so that will help.
