The square body clamshell mounts are actually less obtrusive than the 67-72 ones are so the headers should clear even better on a square body or a 67-72 that has been converted to clamshell mounts, but...

I'd still probably call them to make sure as they my have been designed for a specific engine mount adapter plate and engine placement. I know the S&P headers don't fit well with some of the other brand engine mounts & adapter plates. Being ceramic coated you don't have any easy options to modify them to fit your application if they were designed for a different engine placement.

Re: 85 burb meets 6.0 lq4

I need help picking exhaust set up. They system i have now is going to trash heep when i get my headers. So what size exhast should i get. 2.5 or 3 inch. I think i will stay with flowmasters but not sure what ones. I would like it to be deep sounding. Not the glasspack sound i have now sometimes. Has anyone used the new hushpower muffs from flowmaster?

Re: 85 burb meets 6.0 lq4

I have 2.5" with a balance pipe and 50 series flowmasters on my '77. Very deep, mellow sound that still is plenty loud when I jump on it and wrap it out. If you're having an exhaust shop do the work, keep in mind that they will crimp the pipes when they bend them. The larger diameter the pipe, the worse the crimp is. My '83 has 3" duals to 40 series flowmasters and the crimps are so severe on the 90 degree bends that I bet my 2.5" exhaust flows better... On my next exhaust I'd like to get a mandrel bent tubing kit and put it together myself, but that is a long ways away... In a big shop... with a lift!

The crimp is why i have been thinking the duel 3 inch would be best.

Flowmaster makes a set of 2-1/2" mandrel bent tail pipes for the square body trucks. They would be a great starting point to building your own nice exhaust system. All you need after that are some mandrel U-bends and some lengths of straight pipe.

Re: 85 burb meets 6.0 lq4

I would start with what 68TT mentions for sure! I cannot overemphasize how badly crimped the 3" pipes I have are. They look smaller than the 2.5" pipes where they are bent.

I do not know how to weld. My service truck has one but i am lacking the know how. Also i gel lazy like half way threw somethings and just finish them and dont do my best work sometimes. So i think i will try to talk the guy that rebuilt my rear end in to doing it. He builds drag cars for a living in his shop. He loves making something out of nothing he says. He is a perfectionist as well and comes highly recommended if i can talk him in to doing it.

The crushed pipe is why i am thinking of going up to 3 inch pipe. Cause 2.5 would crush down to 2-2.25. I will call him this week end and see if he is up to the task.

You can get the muffler shop to install the mandrel bent tail pipes and fabricate the rest of the system using mandrel bends if you ask them to do it. It will just cost a little more than a crushed bend system but it is worth it. The difference in cost between the 3" tubing and the 2-1/2" might offset a good portion of the increased labor price to build the system with mandrel bends.

I did that years ago with my 70 Chevelle when I didn't have a welder. They measured the car and came up with a list of U-bends to buy and got them delivered from the local speed shop along with the mandrel bent tail pipes. It took them a week to get the parts so I just brought the car back after they told me they were ready.

The shop enjoyed building a system like that. It was a change of pace and they did a great job.

Re: 85 burb meets 6.0 lq4

Got the headers in mail today. They are most definitly not long tubes. Mid-length at best. Kinda a let down but if they work i guess it does not really matter because they are the only option i really have. Cant wait to install them. They are huge for sure.

Truck is at the shop getting the front truetrac installed. The same place will hopefully do the exhaust at some point. I will do a test fit.
