Re: My Big Fat Renovation

That was 100% my reasoning for adding the accent roof over the deck. The door that's on there now is the THIRD french door. I replaced the first one that didn't have flashing a couple years after we bought the house. I flashed the 2nd door, but the damn rain actually rotted the door bottoms themselves (that door is in shade all but a couple hours in the morning) so I finally added the 2' overhang. So far so good!

The shop doors will be wrapped in tin and PVC trim, so that should be fine and I'm using metal doors back with heavy foam insulation so they should be fine. These roofs will be more for looks, the doors are so tall any sideways rain will get the bottoms wet.

The extra shade on yours will be nice too! I thought about building out the back another 10' (like a lean to) but I'm so far past my original time/money, etc... I don't need it. It keeps me at a car limit. I don't need anymore than I have.

Re: My Big Fat Renovation

Looking good Jesse. I hear you about this heat and hooomidity thing. I felt like I could fill a big swimming pool with the sweat I rung out of my shirt and pants today, and it was still early in the day.

Re: My Big Fat Renovation

Thanks Bill! The hoomidity is awful this time of year every year. The temps don't bother me (don't get me wrong, I don't want Arizona hot) but our 95* days with low humidity feel SO MUCH different than the same day with near 100% humidity. In about 2 weeks the weather should start to be fantastic for the next couple months.

Re: My Big Fat Renovation

Absolutely GORGEOUS labor day weekend here. Mid 80s daytime, low 60's at night/first thing in the morning, sunshine the whole time...

The roof really changes the look of the garage, glad I did it.

I did screw up a bit, I got ahead of myself and had to remove the top row of shingles to put the angled tin down. Ooops. I was a little flustered this weekend, as the post below will show...

Re: My Big Fat Renovation

However, I did not get as far as I wanted to, because this little guy decided to show up a couple weeks early:

James Wyatt
Born 09/08/20 at 13:13
6lb 10oz

Mom's blood pressure went bezerk on friday, hospitalizaion, two days of failed induction drugs, we decided to go with a c-section, which was the right decision as he was transverse (sideways) and had his cord around his neck. He was just far enough along to avoid the NICU.

...and he totally has my hair... and looks almost exactly like my baby pics.

Shop is on hold for the next 5 years until this little guy can swing a hammer and I can pop a cold snack and watch him work

Little guy and mom are doing GREAT! They get to come home Friday.

I already bought his first project truck. It's a Ford, so I'm sure a bunch of crap is already broken. I swear, if he squats it, I'll dis-own him...

Have you considered that you have one year to finish so that you can make sure you can supervise while he is in there. Enjoy, it will seem like no time till he is up and running.

Re: My Big Fat Renovation

Big congrats to you and the missus! He won't need you much at first, but the boss will likely need you to carry more of the load for a while. Give you a few weeks and then hope to see more updates on the shop - while you still can .

Re: My Big Fat Renovation

Thanks all

They get to come home today. I'm off for the next week.

She's taking off until New Years and then returning part time (3 days/wk) and keeping full benefits (4 days/wk was her regular schedule).

I will squeeze in finishing the roof/soffit and tin. I learned my lesson on the house, if the tin doesn't go up when it's at least in the 80's out it will warp like a SOB when it's 98* out. The lesson cost me at least $100 and some high ladder work on the house garage a couple years ago. Cold doesn't seem to affect how it looks, just the heat.

The original plan was for it to be COMPLETED by June/July. Everything started unraveling when the crane for the trusses got delayed by a month (I could only get my friends to help on a saturday, booking/rain...) then straightening the trusses/getting the sheeting on took way longer than it should have... I had to wait almost 2 months to get shingles installed... electric was another month long wait... it's also rained more this year than I can recall it ever raining in this area... and now I have to build a staircase so I can pass framing so I can move on to insulation/sheeting because I can't get the juice turned on until that's done. It should be close to done this winter. I get a couple weeks off from work for Christmas/New Years.

Re: My Big Fat Renovation

I got to enjoy a week off at home with mama and the little guy. He's been out in the shop a few times now with the awesome weather we're having.

I tried to spend every morning and evening inside, so I only got 4-5 hrs/day to work on the shop. I did get a good chunk done though.

Re: My Big Fat Renovation

I also hate how long little projects take, but up and down the ladder 5 million times and installing all the F channel with string lines, etc, just took a looooong time. I still have one long side to go. Came out nice though! I had to kick up the lighting on my phone to get halfway decent pics of it.

Re: My Big Fat Renovation

I hope to add the tin this weekend and get that over with. When that's up no more heights! I'll only need the scaffold set up one level to do the siding.

Duke Power also came while I was home, which was nice because I was able to see what they did and make a couple small requests. They did a great job. Because the pole wasn't large enough for a drop down, they had to install a pedestal.

Now I get to regrow grass there... again....

Re: My Big Fat Renovation

The good news is James seems to really like car rides and being in his stroller. I was a little worried, a couple of my sister's kids would get car sick, or get really fussy in cars, but we've done at least 10 car trips now and he hasn't made a peep in any of them.

Mom is doing much better now too. She finally felt good enough to get out of the house and go for a walk on Sunday.
