Nice! What about the seams in the door openings? Weld them up and then filler of some sort to smooth them out?

Welding/seam sealer/glaze on fenders to cab and seam sealer/glaze on cab/door seams...so far.

Re: 1958 Apache 38 Dually Dump Project

So that is going to be a "One-Piece" complete cab and front clip when you are all done. The only remove-able sheetmetal will be doors and hood pretty much?

I guess with all the welded joints you wont have to worry too much about bondo breakout with potholes and bumps and such....

Lookin great.... Lot-O-work!

Re: 1958 Apache 38 Dually Dump Project

Yep, pretty much a 4 piece cab and front clip!

The entire assembly is fairly rigid...tying in the inner fenders to the firewall stiffened it up quite a bit, triangulation of sorts.

The frame is fairly rigid also, crossmembers, steps, and plating add to that.

All in all, I hope that there won't be much difference between chassis flex and body flex...and we're trying to minimize the amount of bondo also.

But, time will tell!

Re: 1958 Apache 38 Dually Dump Project

Not much to report...still trying to work through the smoothing/shaping stage.

Our buddy Scott has been busy with his life and we only have a few moments here and there to work on the 58. I wish we were more experienced with this stage of the build and could move forward on our own, but we need his help.

These pics look a lot like the older pics, but we are making some progress...doors are very close to where they need to be, body lines are being massaged together, and low spots and seams are disappearing.

We're doing well...keeping busy with everything but the 58! Scott has the truck at his shop now, hoping that will make it easier for him to work through the bodywork.

Thanks Dug! Progress has slowed a bit, but we'll get there eventually.

Thanks!...and welcome to the site, lot's of great people/builds/info here.

The cab is still at Scott's place. I spoke to him last week and he is trying to light a fire under it...we would like to have it back before the end of the year. I'm anxious to get back on it!!

Re: 1958 Apache 38 Dually Dump Project

The cab's getting a little closer to being ready for primer. The doors and hood are locked down and the gaps are looking really good.

We're in final sanding with just a bit more glaze here and there...mainly in the engine bay and interior.

There will be more smoothing/sanding after primer, but it will be a huge step for me to have it one color.

Re: 1958 Apache 38 Dually Dump Project

We've had a couple decent days of weather, so decided to get back on finishing the bedsides. I've been putting this off because I wasn't looking forward to all the sanding.

Anyway, spent half the weekend and got about a third of the bedsides done.

We are fine sanding the old sides back to fresh wood, floating some black paint onto them, sanding them back down to expose some grain, and then treating them with a Thompson water seal/stain.
