Re: Tricked-out Chevy six cylinder engines

I just did a "spray can rebuild" on the 250 in my '66 shortbed. All stock except for the HEI. I do have a Offy/Holley 390 combo on the shelf to go on in the near future.

I was planning on the Langdon headers, or possibly one of the 2.5" outlet 292 manifolds. I'm going to run the offy with the stock exhaust though for a while due to budget constraints. Both the 1bbls I have around are weepy, warped, throttle shaft leaking crap, and I don't want to spend the coin on another.

Re: Tricked-out Chevy six cylinder engines

I bought my Clifford Research long tube headers back in '78, when they were under $90 bucks. Can't get 'em for that now. Mine have lasted thru 2 engines, but I've had them re-flanged to 3/8" and -- after #5 tube got bashed in off-roading -- that tube was resectioned. They ran 25 years on a 1977 build and then were hot tanked and bead-blasted for a 2005 rebuild. Don't know what I'd run now, if I had to build up another 292, but Clifford's are not in the budget anymore.

Re: Tricked-out Chevy six cylinder engines

Hi i just got my trucks home. I got 2 1966 gmc 1/2tons. Ones a parts truck with a 283 and the other is my good one with a 6 banger. Reading this thread got me thinking maybe keeping the 6 banger and fixing it up like these tricked out ones on this thread. Question i have is what kind of output or horsepower can be had with doing these 6 cylinders right?

The question we will have is..............How much money do you want to spend.
Unless your towing something, I never understood why people worry about how much power an engine makes. Now having said that, I blew through 7K real fast and got nearly 300HP out of my 292.

Depends on which one you have. Your GMC could have a 230,250, or 292.

230: Flat top pistons. 4 inch side covers.

250: Dished pistons. 4 inch side covers.

292: 6 inch side covers and fuel pump in the center.

I'd keep the six man. Something different, easiest IMO to work on and you can bolt on some upgrades before you get into the real performance stuff.

Re: Tricked-out Chevy six cylinder engines

Ok guys i thought I would post some ear candy over hear for the ones who are not following my 46 build thread. This is the first start up since dyno day of my 292. This motor was built by Larry's Power in Groton Ct., the same shop that did Leo Santucci's spliced head 292. Enjoy!

Re: Tricked-out Chevy six cylinder engines

So I finally got the Offy/Holley 390 combo up and running a few weeks ago. I used a cable throttle assembly from an '88-up Chevy truck. After some carb repair and tuning, it runs pretty well, and gets around the same mileage that I was getting with the original setup, 14-15 MPG. That's with the stock 3 speed, 3.73 rear, and 28" tall tires. There is a noticeable power increase as well. I'm running it with a stock exhaust manifold for now, but Langdon headers are what I have planned for the future.
