Re: Columbus..the 1957 IH 4x4..

got dad back from the hospital last night..they didn't find anything wrong but he felt much better..

been awhile since ive bought black iron pipe...my goodness that stuff is priced high...left lowes with $300 less than i went in with...bought all the piping they had..
i also have 4 50' retractable hose reels ,one in each corner of the shop...they've been bolted to the wall for about 10yrs and I never did plumb them in...been dragging air hoses around the shop ever since I built it..
since I'm running black iron gas lines I figure I may as well finish the hose reels while I'm at it...and il need more piping to finish that
but ive got the gas line plumbed to the outside of the shop...have to dig a ditch to the tank next to finish the piping..

Re: Columbus..the 1957 IH 4x4..

No truck stuff, but I managed to finish my gas line work for the new shop heater...when I set my tank yrs ago it was at the edge of the yard..since I built my pole barn my yard has moved back a bit and the tank was always in the way.....so while I had the gas off I went ahead and moved my tank behind the pole barn...now i wont have to dodge it with my C30 all the time like before..had to hurry up and get the gas back on to my itlldo for heat.. was 75deg mon, 68 Tues, and 74 today...and they giving snow on fri...just finished working 4 nights and I got to work the next 4 days...so I had to get it done..
Also got a good start on my airline project..got it about half finished...having to wait on lowes to restock the pipe rack...
Heater update...gas line done..110 power done...still have to do exhaust and run thermostat wires...then I'll have some shop heat....or blow the shop up...

Re: Columbus..the 1957 IH 4x4..

Well I'm calling the shop heat project a success ...today the outside temp is 40deg and headed to 23deg tonite...the temp inside the shop is 55deg...I waited till late afternoon to do a test run...I didnt want the sun to affect the shop temp..
So I set the t-stat on 70deg..and had to run to town..got back in a hour and half..shop temp was a nice 70deg already...when i get the real insulation job done it should be great..

Turned the heat off and checked the temp again...in 35-40 min the temp had dropped back to 62deg..which really shows the need for insulation...

Re: Columbus..the 1957 IH 4x4..

I run the heater in my shop between 62-64, I find it cycles on and off less that way and it's comfortable to work in short sleeves. Much warmer and depending upon the task I get too hot. I have a similar heater, a 125k btu natural gas unit.

Congrats on getting that project knocked off the list! About time to start looking into an AC solution now before it starts getting hot & humid again.

Re: Columbus..the 1957 IH 4x4..

Yeah bigd... 65 is probably where I'll run it most of the time...but I needed to be able to hit 70-75...I'm making a temporary paint booth inside the shop and needed those 70ish temps for painting..
Normally I paint outside weather permitting, but the weather just wont cooperate here lately

Re: Columbus..the 1957 IH 4x4..

Tell me bout it Rick...95deg shop temps are just around the corner...
I have a idea I want to try for shop cooling...I'm thinking about doing a geothermal cooling system..
I have a 6+acre pond next to the shop...we've been talking about running the water coils below ground level under the water...they'd be about 15ft or so below the surface...they say itll work...but we'll see

Re: Columbus..the 1957 IH 4x4..

Have you checked out a product like Portacool? It's basically a big radiator that circulates water through from a garden hose and a big fan blows over it. It's really simple and really effective

I have as a matter of fact...and I've talked to several people around here that have them...they dont work so good here they say...they blame it on our high humidity....

Starting to sort out the fuel system..going with a summit 385 pump, Holley regulator with cleanable filter, and a cleanable prepump filter...now to find some where to mount it all...
I've got room in front of the transfercase that looks promising...off to lowes to find some rubberized clamps..

Re: Columbus..the 1957 IH 4x4..

Well after I got the bumper and grill back from chrome, it made my other exterior chrome look really bad..
It looked good enough before ,with only minor defects in the chrome..nothing left to do but send the rest off for rechrome...well it came back today looking like brand new..maybe even better than it did in 1957..
They rechromed everything and did a 24k gold plating on the "IH" for the front emblem..I think it all turned out great..
The ribbed area behind the IH was painted black, so I'll have to paint that..it should make the IH really stand out against the chrome...also the words "drive" and "series" were black as well

Got the front emblem painted and assembled...the black really makes the IH stand out...now to figure out how to get paint into the words drive and series...the narrow lettering is near impossible to sand..

Use one of these with a hypo 49 needle. Most sign suppliers will have them. This one is a hypo 25 and is too small a needle for paint to get thru.

Greg
With the hypo bottle, I usually only fill it about 1/2 full at most then squeeze all the excess air out. By doing that, you can hold it in the upside down position and it will not drip out until you gently squeeze it further. I have had good success with them
