Re: 1972 Chevy p/u NewType Build
Lot of cleaning and part searching yesterday learning a lot about the vortecs and their differences. So we started with a couple plugs for the top using the heat riser from mine and the brass plug in the back for the coil new plug in front.
Some of the parts I ordered up like the Carter strip super mechanical fuel pump (120 gph 7-9 psi) edelbrock throttle and kickdown linkage bracket which is really cool and adjustable as well. Egr block off plate and plate for the fuel pump. I also picked up VH Coachworks ground strap kit waiting to start replacing mine on the truck looks pretty good. Does anyone know where I can attach these to the motor when it's a center bolt style block? Usually were supposed to place them under the valve covers against the heads right? Ha to get the intake painted, that grey it has is just a little off from the rest of the motor so we treated it with semi gloss engine enamel well see how that holds up to the heat. You can see we placed the temp gauge in the vertical hole at the front of the intake. Hopefully well stab it in the truck today sometime and have it ready to run when we can. Posted via Mobile Device

Re: 1972 Chevy p/u NewType Build
Alright let's start with I'm still waiting this week for A: My fuel injection heat up plug as I don't have fuel injection of a pipe plug that will fit the diagonal hole on my intake so waiting for American Chevrolet to call me back on my part and then B: a motor guy that's worth his word to come start this motor off the right way instead of flaking on me every time.
No I'm not bitter at all ^^ So ill update you guys on where were at so far with all that's installed and so detail pictures of my setup since I had none from when I first did my motor four years ago. Prothane polyurethane motor mounts just like the trans mount I have and energy suspension rubbers I have on my sway bar definitely a great product to invest in as I've had the motor and trans for four years and there's no wear on them at all. Keep your ride smooth. Going to be replacing all my old corroded ground straps with VHCoachworks 67-72 heavy duty 5-piece ground strap kit you can definitely see a difference here.. I'm runnin my carter on here this round as it was the preferred fuel pump so I made it work with some black aluminum pipe fittings and will run my 3/8ths rubber line from there up to my inline filter before I hit the carb. Also had to trim back some of my 89 suburban serpentine pulley block brackets (great find as they fit wonderfully to any early block and most definitely my vortec block now. So here's a close up of the front of the motor to show of the system (power sterling pump and pulley are in lower right hand corner not pictured here as I left the pump in the engine bay so I wouldn't have to bleed the system. Smog pump on lower left but I don't have to run that ) Oh might as well show that she's in and mated up to her new BFF th350 Checklist: -radiator with new fluid -fan shroud -empty motor fluids and prime with new fluids -carb -hook up linkages -run all wiring back to original places -replace center bolt valve covers with my adapters and perimeter bolt covers -install stock manifolds for break-in then uninstall -install my new thorley mid lengths with gaskets -install dist. And run plug wires to find TDC for break in process -hook up battery double check wiring -install intake plug -run heater hose And that should be all needed to be ready to fire Posted via Mobile Device

Re: 1972 Chevy p/u NewType Build
Looks like my center to perimeter bolt adapters will work just fine with my stock rocker arms (was worried by them needing narrow width rockers) so I can't wait to try my covers on the new motor this weekend why must I have to work

Re: 1972 Chevy p/u NewType Build
Alright finally some time ill try and sum it up as much as I can to avoid my long detailed BS its just a new motor right?
Anyway our longtime motor guy flaked all weekend so I finally had my coworker help us out Sunday morning with getting the last bit of it all installed and setup. We set the carb on around 9am filled her full of oil and the radiator full of water. Triple checked all intake bolts and plugs and electrical wires. He primed the motor with his special tool to spin in place of the distributor, bumped the motor to TDC, set the dist. To #1. Plugged the plug wires in fave a little shot of gas to the carb and at 11:09 that morning VROOM!! She started up like a dream within a couple pumps from the throttle With a little bit of tinking from the flexplate barely skimming the starter snout and a whole lot of smoke flying from the paint peeling headers she was off to the races for her break in exhaust leaks and all. My coworker said his goodbyes round noon and my dad and I finished buttoning up the linkages and grinding the flexplate a bit so she wouldn't destroy my starter. With all the little stuff we left the shop about 5pm and I sailed on down the freeway. First big difference is the fact that I literally am all the way off the pedal to do 65 and wow does she zing along at the higher speeds no big runs yet just up to 85 and altering speeds to help the motor adjust from all those years of sitting. Ill be taking it easy on her for awhile even though its killin me to find out her true potential and wax my buddies lil 302 mustang in town but that will be in a couple weeks I wanna make sure she does good and lives a strong healthy life in my truck. So far it's pretty darn promising from what I've felt while driving it home and today to work. So here's a couple videos from Sunday during the startup and break in period like I said before smoke from paint on the headers and tinking from the flexplate which is solved mostly. http://youtu.be/PxH-xSXWFx0 http://youtu.be/5cwNxzGIsqI Posted via Mobile Device Posted via Mobile Device
