Re: Project "My Happy Mess"

Well, it's about 100 degrees here today, with humidity.
We didn't get much finished, but thinking the cab might be painted before week's end.
Got the truck spun around and ready for the next phase: sanding.
Should we dry or wet sand? What are your experiences or preference? Thanks

It'll be a nice 80 even with air.
We're running the A/C all tonight for tomorrow morning.

Re: Project "My Happy Mess"

Got the 'top' (bottom of back window up) portion of the cab sanded today.
We'll just paint it (white) first to get it out of the way then work on the rest of the cab next week.

Personally, I would dry sand to do your blocking on high build primer. Start with 180-320 (depending on your preference, straightness, and whether or not you will be re-priming). Then go to wet sanding starting at 400 finishing with 600 before paint. good luck

Re: Project "My Happy Mess"

Thanks Mike My younger brother is an x-body man who is set in his ways but likes to see what others think for some stuff.
Grab your cup of coffee and check out some pics

Taped up and wet sanded.

Grease remover after finished sanding and right before primer/paint.

Non-sanding primer

Some white

No A/C running (throughout any painting process) at this stage of the game.
Here's where the temps climbed.

Yesterday. Sanding clear.

On to buffing

a good feeling the top is out of the way, finished!

Re: Project "My Happy Mess"

Went to install the rear window, but that didn't go so well
Not sure if it's the original weatherstriping's age (if original) or not contributing the the problem.
The deluxe chrome trim doesn't want to seat properly on the top corners.
The rubber curls in too much there too, causing a poor, improper seal against truck.
Bought a new Precision (the only one I could find on the net) seal.
Should arrive middle of next week and the rear window will be installed

Until then, we'll be... you guessed it, sanding.

I'll post up a pic later of the deluxe trim trouble.

Re: Project "My Happy Mess"

Pictures as promised. Here's what the deluxe chrome rear window trim is doing.
I think the seal shrunk while off of the truck, and now, well

Both sides (top corners) look like this:

Re: Project "My Happy Mess"

I am at the same point in my build. I bought seals from Brother's and they said they are Precision. The rear window gasket is too big, so I have excess on the top and no bending under. I am afraid it will bunch up on install. The windshield is curling under just like your photo above. I am wondering if these will work themselves out during install. My cab is being painted tomorrow, so I should be working this next weekend.

Hard to see but excess gasket on Rear top

The next two show the top left on the windshield. The gasket is bending under like yours. The two trim pieces don't meet in the middle as a result. I hope when we install the windshield the gasket will fold out and let me push the trim into the slot.

Now you've got me worried that we are doing something wrong and that's why it isn't seating properly Seriously, my windshield guy said they were pulling the corners out but they'd just get sucked back in and couldn't get it to sit right. Did your seal come in a green (or labled) bag marked Precision?

Re: Project "My Happy Mess"

Yesterday I ordered a new set of Precision seals from GMCPauls just to make sure I have the right ones. The bag mine came in was clear and did not have a manufacturer on it. Here is a good video on how to install the windshield: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=SOU_0...ature=youtu.be

I will keep you posted on the progress once the new seals arrive.
