Well ok - I had it installed 2 days ago and it was fine. I have also ridden in the back of a 2001 from Memphis to Houma La. for Katrina support. It was 7 hours and I chose to ride in the back on the way home too. Maybe an 89 is a tighter fit???. Also my crew cab is longer inside than the 2002 donor vehicle the seats come from.

I just went out to measure and my new crewcab is 4 inches longer from the heel area of the front floor to the cab back that the rear seat mounts to. I also measured my seat bolt holes, and without realizing what I had done exactly, I have 1 inch extra legroom in the front and 3 inches extra in the back. Of course I will probably adjust the front seat to fit me, so the rear will end up getting all 4 extra inches.

To clarify - I was comparing my new 1972 Crew to my 2002 parts truck Silverado.

Ok, got the brakes all finished up. Time to mount the steering column and see if calculations were correct. Guess what....
Column fits just barely and all is well as long as you don't ever need to put the vehicle in PARK. Argh. There is no more moving the booster up because the fluid cap would rub on the hood, don't want to move the column down because of the factory hole and rubber seal. Soooo, I loped off the shift ear that was making contact and will have to weld a new piece on a little lower to clear.

Tell me something, is there a part missing to hold up my steering column? I found the 1 inch wide strap, but isn't there something else? I can't find it in my parts boxes.

I have the big part that the brake pedal hangs from, and a 1 inch wide strap that clamps the column to that. At the firewall I have a football shaped piece that the column goes through with 2 screws to the firewall. My problem is the the column still wiggles. You can actually see the column move at the firewall and if you pull it enough you see daylight at the rubber grommet to column. Is there a clamp outside the firewall?

It's a little tight in here tonight.
I hooked up my previous steering mount old to new conversion and it still works fine, no binding. Man, look how close it is under the booster. You can see the brake fluid cap is also going the be close to the hood. I am figuring about 3 eighths of an inch, I may put a felt hat on it just in case.

yes, there is a bracket that clamps outside the firewall. One bolt on the column and two on the firewall...

You could get a lower profile reservoir for you brakes to free up some clearance.

A few more pics from last night showing my reinforcing sleeve and a shot of my seat fully back in relation to my steering wheel. The eyelet end piece is the old trucks mount that connects to the brake pedal arm. It is threaded for adjustment and here I have it turned out about 1 turn.
I went out to my current driver truck and I have the seat adjusted a few inches forward of where this picture is showing. I'm 5-10 so any 6 foot plus guy should fit in here no problem.
